Admittedly, my opinion on the LG UltraGear 45GR95QE-B has changed since I wrestled with my initial unboxing. Initially, I scoffed at its ridiculous size, and my partner couldn’t quite understand why I’d swapped my usual gaming monitor out with ‘a weird shaped tele’. At a glance, that's exactly what this screen looks like, and it pretty much engulfs any spare space that used to exist on my gaming desk. Now that I’ve spent a few weeks with the display, I now feel like we owe LG’s panel an apology, as gaming TVs can only dream of matching its specs and abilities. We tested the monitor with titles including Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, which are able to make full use of the width of this monitor – and there's no debate that they look superb. The only department where the monitor falls down slightly is its maximum brightness, as is often the case for OLED: it barely detracts from the visuals at all, especially with HDR (high dynamic range) content, but you will find brighter screens out there. There also are several panel-saving features. LG includes an automatic screensaver, along with a pixel-cleaning function to keep your panel looking clear. In addition to being LG’s first 45-inch curved OLED gaming monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio and WQHD (3440 x 1440) resolution, the 45GR95QE is also the company’s first-ever display to combine a 45-inch screen-size with an 800R curvature; a pairing that helps boost users’ sense of immersion. A genuine gaming powerhouse, the 45GR95QE will be displayed at IFA 2022 along with LG’s impressive 48GQ900 UltraGear OLED gaming monitor. The screen does include a “anti-glare and low reflection” coating like the current 48″ OLED 48GQ900 model in LG’s OLED range. This is likely to be more suited to most people for a desktop monitor. As with any OLED panel, it’s important to mention a few disclaimers here. There’s always a small risk of OLED burn-in, though the hysteria surrounding OLED burn-in is a bit overblown. I didn’t have the slightest hint of image retention during my testing, and the UltraGear OLED 45 will automatically dim after a few minutes of inactivity.Although that’s true on paper, I wouldn’t recommend the UltraGear OLED 45 for these types of games. With the 21:9 aspect ratio, massive size, and steep curve, playing a competitive title always felt wrong. Thanks to OLED’s instantaneous pixel response time speed, the LG 45GR95QE delivers an incredibly responsive fast-paced gaming experience with no visible trailing artifacts or overshoot. The stand of the monitor is fairly sturdy and offers a good range of ergonomics, including up to 110mm height adjustment, -5°/15° tilt, +/- 10° swivel and 100x100mm VESA mount compatibility. LG’s UltraFine Display Ergo AI sports a 31.5-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS display with 95 percent coverage of DCI-P3 and excellent HDR image reproduction. The combination of a premium, high-resolution screen and an articulated stand that can be intelligently adjusted by LG’s AI technology, the 32UQ890 is a customized, comfort-enhancing workstation solution for busy professionals. Further, variable refresh rate is supported via FreeSync Premium and HDMI 2.1 VRR, and while the monitor’s not officially certified by NVIDIA (at least not yet) as ‘G-SYNC Compatible’, VRR works without issues with supported GeForce GPUs (10-series or newer) for tear-free gameplay up to 240FPS. Speaking of settings, the UltraGear 45GR95QE-B has a healthy array of options within its sleek OSD menu, including various overlays, a toggle for Adaptive-sync (G-Sync compatible Freesync) settings, and ‘game mode’ presets. You’ll also be able to dial in contrast, gamma, and color settings if you’ve not got HDR switched on, and there’s picture in picture functionality too. That latter quirk is handy if you’re a streamer looking to use a console and Windows 11 on one screen, as you’ll be able to use two inputs at the same time.Another downside of OLED technology is the risk of permanent image burn-in and temporary image retention. However, as long as you’re using the monitor sensibly, it shouldn’t be an issue. The screen also has a light matte anti-glare coating that prevents reflections without making the image too grainy.

If you happen to do a lot of work that involves text, the LG 45GR95QE is obviously not ideal for you, but unless you’re particularly sensitive to this type of thing, we find that it’s tolerable. Just keep in mind that if you’re coming from a display with a much higher pixel density, it will take some time to get used to.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 has a lot of similarities with the LG UltraGear, including the focus on gaming and the ultrawide, curved form factor. One of the key differences is that it comes with on-board apps, so you can use it as a standalone smart TV as well – and there are built-in speakers you can make use of too. When the UltraGear OLED 45 is operating at full tilt, there’s nothing like it. The gaming experience for cinematic titles is engrossing, and you won’t want to stop playing. Outside of that boundary, though, the display becomes a lot less practical. LG’s exhibition booth (Hall 18, Messe Berlin) at IFA 2022 from September 2-6 will give visitors the opportunity to experience the company’s very latest consumer electronics innovations, including its new display solutions for productivity (Ergo) and entertainment/gaming (UltraGear).
