About this deal

It was a lot of improvisation. The thing I would say it’s most akin to is Curb Your Enthusiasm. We’ve got a talent who shows up in a sandbox we’ve prepared, and he improvises his way through everything. I’ve worked with Bear for five years now, and that’s his thing. You give him a sandbox and then launch him. Mae’n bleser gennym gyflwyno’r Rhaglen Ysgolion yn fyw eleni, gyda digwyddiadau wyneb yn wyneb i ddisgyblion yng Nghyfnod Allweddol 2 yn cael eu rhedeg ar ddydd Iau 25 Mai ac i ddisgyblion yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4 ar ddydd Gwener 26 Mai. It was months and months of pre-production. Basically, Bear would send us to places he thought would be interesting for adventures. And then we shot for about five days per episode. There’s a couple two-parters in there, but they were each five days per part. BEAR GRYLLS OBE, has become one of the world’s most recognised faces of survival and outdoor adventure. They face an uncertain future and are under constant pressure to thrive in an overwhelming and fast-paced world. You vs the World: The Bear Grylls Guide to Never Giving Up retells Bear Grylls’ most extreme adventures in a kid-friendly way.

A hoffech chi wybod sut y mae cŵn yn siarad yn Gymraeg, Saesneg ac Almaeneg, neu sut mae dweud 'mae eisiau bwyd arnaf i’ yn Sbaeneg ac Almaeneg? Bydd y gweithdy amlieithog hwn, o dan arweiniad y Prifardd Mererid Hopwood, yn canolbwyntio ar rythm geiriau a brawddegau, gan gyflwyno tair neu bedair iaith ar yr un pryd. Drwy’r sesiwn chwareus hwn, bydd disgyblion yn mwynhau dysgu ieithoedd newydd a dysgu sut y mae gwrando’n ofalus ar rythm ac odl. Watching Bear Grylls as he jumps out of helicopters and crosses white-water rapids on tree trunks, you’d be forgiven for thinking the TV adventurer is superhuman. We are thrilled to bring you the Programme for Schools live this year, with in-person events for pupils in Key Stage 2 on Thursday 25 May and Key Stages 3 & 4 on Friday 26 May.

Success!

Enjoy two days of fun and inspiration with exciting writers and thought-provoking performances for young people. Give the young person in your life the mindset they need to thrive. Kids today are presented with new challenges all the time. Did Bear end up liking the multiple versions? It feels like it could cramp his improvisational style.

What I meant by the improvisation was, whether Bear fell off the log or not, or whether he made it across on the vine, we didn’t know which way was going to be right and which was going to be wrong until after he did it. So then we’d say, “Okay, that worked, so this moves us on to the next obstacle.” Or, “Shoot, that really screwed up. This is a dead end for the viewer.” Bear’s tough. If you remember him from his Man vs. Wild days, you’ve seen him jump into things like that naked, with no editing. So yeah, he fell in the ice. He pulled himself up out of there. What he actually did was he stripped down, because his clothes were soaking wet, and started rolling in the snow to get the wet stuff off of him. That’s true. It’s probably like pro sports, right? The fans and the stats will tell you when you’re too old for this shit. I don’t see him ever not doing it until it’s just not an option for him. He loves it so much. You get him out in the wild, he just comes alive. Related I think you always naturally worry about your kids and want them to learn from your mistakes, but generally I would say I’ve learned more from them than they’ve probably learned from me,” says Bear, who has just launched The Bear Grylls Adventure, an activity centre in Birmingham, where teens are encourage to have a go at everything from axe throwing to shark diving. It’s a combination of Bear and the medics’ judgment call. You could make this show as extreme as you want to, and it could be very dangerous for the host. You could kill the host if you wanted to. We just had to draw that line. When Bear told us, for instance, “If I was really out here, I would figure out a way to start a fire, and I would likely survive. But do we really want to film for the next three hours, me freezing and hopefully starting a fire?” Also, with Netflix, we didn’t want to depict Bear failing mortally. We didn’t want to scare kids. So rescue by helicopter was always an option. When we get to that line when we’d ask Bear if he had any options left, he’d say, “Not really, dude.” And we’d say, “cool, let’s film a rescue sequence.”Explore an imagining of the before and after of global warming with Emma Carroll. Her latest time-travelling adventure suggests that the future has a lot to learn from the past… It’s the near future and Britain is having yet another heatwave. For Polly, it’s the sort of heat that makes her do wild, out-of-character things just to cool down. Like face her fear of deepwater. Essential when she and her brother have been sent to their aunt’s eco lakeside house for the summer. But Truthwater Lake is beginning to dry up and, as the water level diminishes, a lost village emerges... I don’t know. Am I going to be doing this when I’m 70? Are you going to be doing this when you’re 70?

Forget everything you know about perfect princesses and happily ever afters! Waterstones Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho offers something a little different to traditional fairytales, as he takes us on a new adventure with his series Fairy Tales Gone Bad, in which he reimagines well-known characters with a spookier and more gruesome edge. Join him as he brings his creations Zombierella, Frankenstiltskin and Creeping Beauty to life (don’t worry, they’re not that scary), and shares his tips on how to become a masterful storyteller. Coelho is a poet and storyteller, and the 12th children’s laureate. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. Bear's lessons from the wild are transposed to everyday settings, helping kids to develop emotional resilience Totally. It was a real challenge, and there were times when I was pining for the days of the simple, linear, unscripted TV show producing. That being said, I really liked the challenge and I’d love to do more. There are so many places in the world were we could take Bear. I wondered about the scenes with animals — the wolf, the jaguar, the memorable bit with a sheep. I assume they required finding an animal and making sure it was in the right place at the right time?

I don’t want to spoil it for the viewer. Let me just say, part of the game is you making bad decisions, and some of those decisions, it’s almost a human rights issue. We’re not gonna…

Correct. The cameramen stopped because they had to change batteries, and they needed a break because those cameras weigh 40 pounds. I was like, “Aw man, we should be filming this!” But it was too late to capture it. And it was for Netflix Kids, so I didn’t know how they’d feel about naked Bear Grylls. But ask the 48-year-old whether his high-octane career has taken its toll and he will admit these days “everything hurts”. Kids today are presented with new challenges all the time. They face an uncertain future and are under constant pressure to thrive in an overwhelming and fast-paced world. We spent millions of years evolving to eat meat and our diets have changed in the last 50 years – I feel humans aren’t designed for that.
