About this deal

Ola Olajide, a celebrated journalist at Womxxxn magazine, is set to marry the love of her life in one month’s time. Young, beautiful, and successful—she and her fiancé Michael are considered the “couple goals” of their social network and seem to have it all. That is, until one morning when they both wake up to the same message: “Oh my god, have you seen The List?” They’re incredible. So, Sheila and I share a best friend so I’ve known her for years. I’d had her in mind for Ola, specifically for the audio book, basically forever and I’d been meaning to ask her but then she announced she’d be in The Woman King [laughs]. I was like, oh god, her life’s changed and now I’m never going to be able to ask her. Then, I saw her at an event and asked her in passing – I didn’t even finish what I was saying, and she said, “Yomi, I’ll do it.” She’s excellent – her impressions of Frankie, Ola’s boss, are exceptional [laughs]. And Arinzé – [his play] Misty was amazing. I couldn’t stop speaking about it for like two years. Could we see them in the show, or do you have other actors in mind?

I have a friend and we both used to say that our biggest fear was being turned into memes, but now, it’s being cancelled. I thought, I’m afraid of this because I’m a public-facing writer, but now we’re all public-facing figures in a way. And in trying to be consistent, I’m quite unlike Ola—I’m unapologetically an inconsistent person. For example, I’m Nigerian and from the Yoruba tribe, and culturally, men in the Yoruba community tend to pay for things instead of women. I love that [ laughs]. I’ve never tried to frame it as a feminist practice, because it’s not. It’s like trying to put a feminist slant on misogynistic elements of hip-hop. I’m like, it is just misogynistic, but it’s okay that you still like it. That’s not to say we should embrace hypocrisy, but we should embrace being flawed people. At the moment, I feel like we’re sleepwalking into this incredibly severe mental health crisis. Compulsively readable, wildly entertaining, and filled with sharp social insight, The List is a piercing and dazzlingly clear-sighted debut about secrets, lies, and the internet. Perfect for fans of Such a Fun Age, Luster, and My Dark Vanessa, this is a searing portrait of these modern times and our morally complicated online culture.

I wouldn’t say bruised. It’s like putting your hand in a fire. You learn from it. I’ve healed.” We circle around times when an article of hers has gone viral for the wrong reason or there’s been a racist pile-on in the comments section, but she glosses over how much she lets it bother her. There was a time when every industry had its own list [of alleged sexual abusers and predators] circulating, right? Music, film, media. I’ve seen names on lists where I’ve gone: ‘Gosh, I’ve heard about this before.’ And then there are others where your kneejerk is: ‘Oh. OH.’ I remember seeing one particular allegation and then later some information coming out that really complicated things.”

It makes us question where do we draw the boundaries. To what extent is it morally right to reveal things on social media. What happens when intent and results do not match?. I absolutely loved how Adegoke explored Ola's situation. Does she trust her fiance or an anonymous list? There's always a grain of doubt in one's mind after such an issue blows up. How to deal with being a feminist and being accused of being a pseudo feminist? How to balance her job and personal life? The List" by Yomi Adegoke is a contemporary novel that focuses on one of the most insidious aspects of most social media platforms: cancel culture and its dangerous consequences. The MCs weren’t likable at all. Not the main or side characters so I barely even cared about them. The issues mentioned in this book were not treated with respect. I didn’t feel any passion or love for the story from the author in the words. It feels very mechanical. The author clearly lays out that less than 1% of men accused are impacted while all victims are harmed 100% of the time. The debacle with Meg thee Stallion after being a victim of gun violence is all the proof I need that wr don't need to be worried about the impact of this type of public shaming on perpetrators. I got so annoyed at the wedding scene where the couple expected everything to be okay and fade away and Ola acting as if she had no choice but to marry Michael. I see many new novels falling into this pit. Many themes are crammed into the read—#Metoo movement, anonymous sexual allegations, judgement passed on social media, relationships in the digital age, journalist life and scoops, rape, legal system, etc.

The List by Yomi Adegoke review – a gripping social media

It’s truly no surprise that it’s being adapted for TV with Adegoke as Executive Producer. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how the TV adaptation develops the characters of Fola, Ruth, Celie and Kwabs. Challenging the discourse of victim blaming and online witch hunts, The List doesn’t promise any answers – and it needn’t. What it does do is ask provocative questions, and does so fearlessly, unafraid to wade into the grey, murky waters of abuse and its victims, the annihilation of abusers left at risk to themselves, and unsightly acts of revenge. Ola Olajide, a high-profile journalist at Womxxxn magazine, is marrying the love of her life in one month's time. Young, beautiful, successful – she and her fiancé Michael are the ‘couple goals’ of their social networks and seem to have it all. Topical, heartfelt, provocative and wise, Yomi Adegoke’s characters are tenderly realized . . . the entire cast of this ultimate millennial novel springs vividly to life.” — Bernardine Evaristo, Booker Prize-winning author of Girl, Woman, Other

Halfway through the book I felt it should be rounded up and got bored. I had to force myself through a lot of things I thought were unnecessary. They met three years ago at a media networking event. Ola is a senior editor at Womxxxn where she heads up the Current Affairs desk, the women's lifestyle brand that releases an agenda-setting digital issue every quarter. And the day #TheList drops Michael starts at CURated. So, once you’d finished the book, what was it like to see it become the subject of this intense bidding war? It’s probably easier to call it a cancel culture novel, or say it’s about #MeToo or feminism, but, first and foremost, it’s a book about the internet. This “consistency” thing is so interesting—with your personal life, political views, and opinions, we all leave this digital trail and everything you do becomes a receipt. If you do one thing on Tuesday and another on Wednesday, people immediately take that as evidence that you’re not exactly who you say you are, when the reality is that people are multifaceted and complicated.

Thank you to HarperCollins UK & 4th Estate for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This book will be available in bookstores in July 2023! No one needs a defense of the bad perpetrators, especially when the victims rarely receive any justice. I’m sure those leading roles will be really sought-after. I saw that Sheila Atim and Arinzé Kene are narrating the audiobook? How would you stand up to scrutiny if you found yourself at the centre of a public scandal? It is a question many are preoccupied with these days, particularly since the popularisation of the term “cancel culture” in the late 2010s. The reader gets to see how these allegations spectacularly blow up this happy couple’s relationship and the trust between them is shattered. Can Michael prove that he didn’t do the things that put him on the list? Can Ola find the evidence that supports Michael’s innocence? Who’s story do you believe? It began as a crowdsourced collection of names and somehow morphed into an anonymous account posting allegations on social media. Ola would usually be the first to support such a list—she’d retweet it, call for the men to be fired, write article after article. Except this time, Michael’s name is on it.
