About this deal

Practicality concerns aside, the OLED panel in the Xperia 10 V is a joy when fully utilized. Multitasking has the space it needs to make proper sense, and the inherent colour profiling of the tech means HDR photos and movies really pop. Starting with design, both the Sony Xperia 5 V and Xperia 10 V bear the unmistakable Sony DNA – sleek, elegant, and exuding a premium feel. The Xperia 5 V, however, stands out with its compact flat form spin and slightly edgier design. It sports a 6.1-inch bright OLED display with Full HD+ resolution, resulting in sharp and vibrant visuals. The fact that it still looks premium without following the trends of glass and shimmery rear paint jobs can’t be ignored either. Screen

Sony has improved the Xperia 10 V’s display compared to the 10 IV, but not in the way that we would have thought obvious. It’s a slightly larger 6.1in FHD+ OLED (up from 6in), and it’s a lot brighter. Sony claims a 50% increase, and I measured an impressive luminance of 613cd/m 2 with auto brightness turned off. We would be remiss not to mention the Google Pixel 6a. It is an overall excellent and quite popular midranger that just so happens to offer some of the same extras as the Xperia 10 V, like stereo speakers and IP67 ingress protection. Like the Xperia, it is a pretty compact device with a 6.1-inch display-diagonal. Sadly, just like with the Sony, the panel here is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. Unlike the Xperia and its rather disappointing Snapdragon 695 chipset, the Google Tensor chip inside the Pixel 6a is a pretty decent part with great modern features - most notably, 4K video capture. And speaking of cameras, though you won't get a telephoto with the Pixel 6a, it is hard to compete with Google's prowess in computational photography. Verdict Once again, not a lot has changed going from the Xperia 10 IV and even the 10 III to the new Xperia 10 V. That's both a good and a bad thing. If you are a fan of the iconic thin and tall, extra light design on the phone, there is just nothing else out there in the midrange space to offer an alternative. Similarly, the 21:9 display aspect ratio remains a pretty exclusive spotlight feature. In general, 1x snaps look good, with decent detail, solid exposure and a nice natural colour tone. Sony’s low-intervention image-processing approach means you won’t always get the same pop that other manufacturers provide, which can make overcast days look a little dark and drab. But in general, it’s a pleasingly clean, unfussy approach. For years now, Sony has attempted to market its phones as great entryways into the world of professional digital photography: a way to teach and inspire and eventually upsell to a proper DLSR or mirrorless frame with a familiar UI structure.

One improvement over last year’s design is the inclusion of dual front-facing stereo speakers, which goes some way to justifying those chunky top and bottom bezels. They’re not particularly loud or punchy, however, and I found that I needed to crank them up to around the halfway mark in normal YouTube video-watching scenarios. The Sony Xperia 1 V offers a flagship display experience typical of Sony’s top-end flagships, with key specs including a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, HDR support, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and a near-4K (1644 x 38400) resolution – the latter remains a unique offering among Sony’s smartphones in the larger Android market.

Moderation is done by humans. We try to be as objective as possible and moderate with zero bias. If you think a Compared to the Pixel 7a in particular, with its snappy 90Hz display and flagship-grade Tensor G2 chip, the Xperia 10 V simply doesn’t feel like it’s fighting in the same weight class. Sony’s choice of 6GB of RAM is ample, so that’s not the issue here, and you get a solid 128GB of internal storage, too.
