About this deal

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) advises against trying to remove earwax or clean your ears by inserting small objects in your ear, even cotton buds . There's no evidence that ear candles or ear vacuums get rid of earwax. A pharmacist can help with earwax build-up

Red earwax is usually a sign that there is blood present in the ear. As the ear canal contains many blood vessels, it could be just a scratch. However, it could also be a sign of an ear infection. Some ear wax remover liquids come in spray form, which you may find easier to administer than drops. Some also come with special syringe-style applicators to help get the solution safely into your ear and deliver a measured amount with each squirt. And a clogged ear may have other causes. “It could be a middle ear infection with fluid filling up the space behind the eardrum,” Dr. Nguyen-Huynh cautions. “Or you could have a viral infection that affects the inner ear. In those cases, a doctor can diagnose and treat you to prevent permanent hearing loss.” This is because they can damage the ear canal and eardrum, cause the wax to be impacted by pushing it further into your ear canal and could even perforate the eardrum. Ear irrigation at homeHowever, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says that ear candles will not help to remove ear wax, and could seriously injure your ear. Avoid if necessary:Don’t use the flushing method if you have a hole in your eardrum or if you’ve ever had eardrum surgery. Flushing may damage your eardrum repair. Watch the temperature:The water should not be too cold or too hot. If it is either, the temperature difference could make you dizzy.

Ear irrigation with an electronic irrigator – this flushes the wax out with water at low pressure: it's much safer and more effective than previous syringing methods because it maintains a set pressure as it pumps the water into your ear. You may find it easier to do this first thing in the morning, and again just before you go to sleep. If ear cleaning drops don’t work, the ears might need flushing with a bulb syringe, which are available at drug stores or grocery stores. You’ll want to fill the syringe with warm water, place it near your ear opening, and carefully squeeze the bulb. The warm water will flood your ear and break up the wax. Turn your head to the side over a sink or bathtub to let the water (and, ideally, wax) flow out.People think that earwax is dirty and needs to be cleaned, but earwax has both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties,” says ear, nose and throat specialist Anh Nguyen-Huynh, MD. “It also protects ears from things that could hurt the eardrum, such as dust, hair or small insects.” Formed in the outer ear canal, the natural wax our ears produce forms a defensive layer in the ear canal. As it is produced it then moves from the outer ear canal to the opening of the ear. This liquid treatment comes with a handy rubber squeeze bottle (basically a syringe) which makes the drops easy to administer without causing a mess. You can use the bottle to keep your ears clean with warm water once the treatment has cleared out your excess ear wax. Users report that it only takes around three or four days of twice-daily treatment to clear their ears.
