Alison found the mini motorised tool useful for pet bedding, the dusting brush great for blinds, curtain poles, light fittings and skirting boards, and the crevice tool a must for upholstery, for reaching the spaces between kitchen appliances and for other hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

What's the V11 Absolute like to use day-to-day?

The High Torque head has another significant benefit, too. On either edge of the cleaner’s head, there are grooves that allow for dust to filter in from the sides, giving the head a wider cleaning path than its direct drive counterpart. There’s a slider on the top to adjust two gates at the front of the brush. Fully lowered, the High Torque head has more suction to the floor; opened up, it allows air through. There’s a mid-position that gives you something in-between, too.

Large debris (rice, spilled cereal and dried leaves) were whisked away in no time, and smaller debris (toast crumbs, washing powder and sugar) vanished in just a couple of swipes. If you want a single vacuum cleaner for all jobs, rather than having to switch between a plug-in cleaner and a cordless model, this is for you. With the new High Torque head and the improved motor, the Dyson V11 produces the best performance we’ve ever seen from a cordless vacuum cleaner, impressively improving on the Dyson V10 in every way. It’s more powerful, lasts longer per charge and is more versatile and convenient, making the Dyson V11 Absolute the ultimate cordless vacuum. Powerful, efficient and with little touches that make a huge difference, the Dyson V11 Absolute outperformed all other cordless vacuum cleaners we put through testing. As with all cordless vacuum cleaners, the V11's bin capacity is small (Alison needed to empty it after only two rounds), but Dyson claims it's actually 40% larger than those on its V8 machines. For most uses on the lower power modes, you can actually hear other people over the V11’s powerful motor – and it isn’t a distracting noise.

You can choose between eco mode (which gives maximum runtime), auto/medium mode (which automatically alters the suction power for carpets and hard floors), and boost mode for ingrained dirt. This is accomplished using the selection button on the display screen. As you may have noticed, I’ve not quoted the figure for the Medium setting. That’s because, unlike the V10, the Dyson V11 doesn’t have one. Instead, the V11 has an Automatic mode, which changes power levels depending on floor type.

Remove the extension pole and the V11 Absolute turns into a capable handheld unit. It’s a touch chunkier than some of its competition, but not to the point of being unusable. The motorised brush makes light work of each step, with standard mode our preferred choice of power mode. You can even use the main power heads for a bit more power. Pet hair was the next test, and again the V11 Absolute performed impeccably, cleaning the hair from the rug with little effort – the results were equally evident from looking at the amount of hair collected in the bin, highlighting its useful size for a cordless cleaner. READ NEXT: Dyson V8 Absolute review: Still the best cordless vacuum? Dyson V11 Absolute review: Design and features If you plug in the new High Torque cleaner head, the Medium mode becomes Auto mode. Here, the V11 uses its Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS), which monitors brush bar resistance up to 360 times per second, to adjust the suction power between carpets and hard floors. This is useful, since who really wants to mess around trying to choose the right power mode anyway? Turn on the V11 Absolute and you’ll find that it isn’t as loud as you might have thought. From head height, measured with the motorised brush in Eco mode, the vacuum comes in at 71dB. On standard mode it’s 74.6dB, and on Boost it’s a whopping 84.6dB.
