The Steelbook offers two winning portraits of Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater set against a kind of cool, one need only contrast the opinions of, say, my colleague Ken Brown, who reviewed the old Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Blu-ray of Accompanying that is the film’s alternate ending, which is brought up many times in the commentaries. It’s also presented here with separate optional commentaries featuring Scott and Tarantino. Tarantino’s script had a different outcome for the film’s two central characters and Tarantino was dead-set on that being the ending. Scott, on the other hand, didn’t feel it was right. It ended up becoming a point of contention between the two and Scott decided to shoot both endings and decide from there. In the optional commentary Tarantino agrees that for this film Scott’s ending does work better. And I must agree with that sentiment after seeing Tarantino’s ending. I see where Tarantino was originally coming from but as pointed out throughout the features Scott’s take on the script places the story in a fantasy movie world and Tarantino’s harsher ending ends up feeling out of place. If he had directed it, as he mentions, it probably would have fit.

The film was a breakthrough for Tarantino. Released after Reservoir Dogs, it was his first screenplay for a major motion picture, and Tarantino contends that it is his most autobiographical film to date. He had hoped to direct the film, but lost interest in directing and sold the script. According to Tarantino's audio commentary on the DVD release, he was happy with the way it turned out. Apart from changing the nonlinear narrative he wrote to a more conventional linear structure, it was largely faithful to his original screenplay. He initially opposed director Tony Scott's decision to change the ending (which Scott maintained was of his own volition, not the studio's, saying "I just fell in love with these two characters and didn't want to see them die"). When seeing the completed film, he realized Scott's happy ending was more appropriate to the film as Scott directed it. [13] The film's first act, as well as some fragments of dialogue, were repurposed from Tarantino's 1987 amateur film My Best Friend's Birthday. [14] Tony Scott's 1993 adaptation of an early Tarantino script is an endlessly quotable, iconically memorable, all-star bona fide classic. When Quentin Tarantino emerged on the scene in the early 90s as the hottest new screenwriter in Hollywood, he came armed with four calling card scripts. Two of them he went on to direct himself, which were of course the era defining ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’. The other two were a pair of ‘lovers-on-the-lam’ thrillers, which although drawn from the same well (the Starkweather killings) couldn’t be more different. ‘Natural Born Killers’ directed by Oliver Stone was a psychotic and controversial acid trip through a media frenzied murder spree. The other was ‘True Romance’. version. Grain resolves really nicely throughout, though it can attain a slightly chunky and yellow appearance in passing. True Romance Review :: Criterion Forum

Brad Pitt's stoner character in True Romance, Floyd, was the inspiration for making the film Pineapple Express, according to producer Judd Apatow, who "thought it would be funny to make a movie in which you follow that character out of his apartment and watch him get chased by bad guys". [34] In the near thirty years since its release, it’s bizarre to realize that True Romance wasn’t a hit at the box office. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this movie or at the very least appreciate it for what it is - a damn good romance with lots of action, a great score, and an amazing cast of colorful memorable (and quotable) characters.
