You are now warned if you are approaching a traffic jam at too high a speed, the danger of which has been particularly underlined by the recent mass accident on the Sheppey crossing. The detection of road closures has been improved, too, alongside more accurate detection of road works, so you can avoid these. Earlier versions of Traffic could occasionally mistake a closed road for one with no jam at all, with potentially annoying results – for example, when the Hammersmith flyover was forced to close in December 2011 for emergency repairs. There are quite a few voices included as standard, although the computerised voice gives you the most information as it can read out street names as you go - useful in built up areas - although some of the pronunciations can be a little off. The TomTom Go 6000 boasts a new chassis, a new interface and a whole new way of working. But should TomTom be fixing things that weren't obviously broken in the first place? The new Predictive Flow Feed more accurately figures out traffic speed on a route, for an improved estimated time of arrival, although we never had much issue with this aspect of TomTom sat-navs. As it is, TomTom Traffic reportedly uses data from 350 million vehicles around the world and covers 99 per cent of UK roads, compared to about 10 per cent for the venerable TMC alternative. So the accuracy is about ten times as much, with TomTom claiming jams are detected down to 10m accuracy compared to 100m for TMC. In our experience, this can make a noticeable difference in predicting delay duration. When navigating, I found some of the voice prompts confusing. Sometimes it told me to keep right when I was simply driving straight down a highway. That led the Miles to Next Turn indicator to be inaccurate, thanks to this over-directing. If the voice prompts really get to you, you can turn them off with a button on the bottom right of the touch screen.

Screen-wise, we're talking 6-inch screen and 800 by 480 pixels, just like the Go 6000. But here's the catch. It's a resistive rather than capacitive touchscreen. Bummer. For starters, that means you lose the pinch-to-zoom gesture support of the pricier TomTom's. But more on the screen response in a moment. The TomTom Go 60 gets TomTom's great new interface and map graphics, something we really appreciate. It also gets a screen that matches the priciest TomTom for size and pixel count. And all for not far off half the price. We also like having map updates free for life.

TomTom hasn't limited the improvements to the Go 6000 to the hardware side of things either, as the interface has enjoyed a significant overhaul. The new interface is dominated by the main navigation screen, with a thin column on the right of the screen that shows you delays on your route along with the distance to your destination along with your ETA.

The immediate out-of-the box impression is along the lines of, hmmm, this is familiar but it feels a bit cheap. At this stage, we're also getting a bit frustrated with the live traffic and active re-routing features. This is an area where all products fall short. TomTom is as good as or as bad as anyone else. The welcome screen takes you straight to a map of your location and a Menu button on the bottom left. It looks like a circle with three dots inside and brings up several options: Search, Current Route (when navigating), Voice Control, Report Safety Camera, and My Places. If you swipe right, you'll see My Routes, Parking, Gas Station, and Traffic & Safety Cameras (if you've linked up the app on your phone.) For the most part, the feature set is pretty familiar. You get TomTom's new-style mapping complete with 3D buildings and its much improved new interface as seen in all the new models.
