Maybe just me and I will definitely try the next Emma Haughton thriller but I long for a big meal of an audiobook like ............ an Anthony Horrowitz Magpie Murders or The Word is Murder, one in the Robert Galbreith Strike series, - the fabulous Hot Water by Cristopher Fowler, Heat Wave by Kate Riorden, The Harbinda Kaur Series by Ellie Griffiths, a well narrated Ruth Ware, The You series by Caroline Kepnes, the recent thrillers by Lisa Jewell, any of the amazing new thrillers by Louise Candlish like The Other Passenger/Sudden Departure of the Frasers/Those People, Tammy Cohen's recent work, The French Girl/How to Kill your Best friend by Lexie Elliot, The Other Couple/Tattletale/The Festival by Sarah J Naughton, Shiver by Allie Reynolds, Breathless by Amy McCulloch, Dirty Little Secrets By Jo Spain, The Cove by Alice Clark Platts, Cara Hunter's excellent series, Jane Casey's Kat Kinsella Series, Liane Moriarty's Apples Never Fall and many other, Rebound?Exposure by Aga Lesiewicz, Something in the Water, The Family Game and The Disappearing Act by Caroline Steadman, Confidence and Conviction and Her Perfect Life by Sam Hepburn .......... these are all thrillers I was truly excited and involved 100% and of course there are many more who have a big place in my heart and who I would re-read chapters of rather than skip or skim. The most divisive part of The Sanctuary we can imagine other readers having is Hunter Murray’s style of writing. He certainly carries a distinctive style, but it’s one that some may find a little eccentric when compared to other authors. There was a lot in this book that I enjoyed - especially the dynamics between the various characters, the luxurious-but-sinister setting and the slow unfolding of the mystery. I'll admit that I couldn't see the solution, even as I was nearing the end, so it kept me reading. I also found the pacing of the second half of the novel to be compelling - as the danger increased, so did my interest. Unfortunately, I found Zoey to be far too nosy which is one of my pet peeves for thrillers. Make her a journalist or a family member seeking answers, and her many questions would have been more justified. I understand that she needed to understand her own place at The Sanctuary, but I feel like all she did was pester into other peoples' lives and that got a little tedious for me.

Zoey has the worst hangover ever. Worse is the excessive heat, the unknown room, the empty building. She’d been in NY, now she was in a desert. How has she been translated here, and what has she done that merits it? That is the first mystery. The building is palatial, like a high spec hotel with a clinical overlay. Looking for the source of a high-pitched scream, she finds a large tent containing a bunch of people sitting in a sort of AA circle, and a hysterical girl demanding to know why Ed had disappeared. The answer to that question forms the second mystery. It becomes clear that this is “The Sanctuary”, a hugely expensive rehab centre in the Sonoran desert of Mexico, twenty miles from anywhere and accessible only by helicopter. Who are the Daniels who chose to serve God rather than man? For yes, we must all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, each to give an account of himself. It is Christ who will enable us to stand if we are IN HIM. Only those IN CHRIST will have eternal life. Is Christ our MASTER? Each to his own master must stand or fall. If Christ is our MASTER, he will enable us to stand, and if we are in HIM, there will come no condemnation upon us. p107: Corben flexed his fingers and felt his muscles tighten as each killer pulled a 9mm automatic, rolled a silencer into place, and chambered a round. The Sanctuary is a mystery set in a pre natal luxury retreat with each pregnant guest full of secrets and turmoil. If I found the idea of spending my last trimester far from an en suite bathroom odd, I didn't let that get in the way of a perfectly good thriller!p49: For a moment, she lost sight of the Merc, then it reappeared half a dozen or so cars ahead, rushing across town, its stealthy shadow close behind. Raymond's 8th novel is an epic alternate history and time travel story that Publishers Weekly called "ingeniously inventive" and "a classic of the genre": It is already out in the UK as THE OTTOMAN SECRET, and is out on Oct 1 in the US under a different title, EMPIRE OF LIES. Unfortunately, the characters were another element of the book that I thought could have been just that next level better. All of the characters at The Sanctuary were there because of some kind of demon they were battling, yet I didn’t feel like I was able to get close enough to any of them to empathise or even dislike. I would have liked for them to have been a bit deeper and for the story to have really leaned into their flaws.

This book was very slow in the beginning. The blurb had me totally intrigued but the blurb just explained the first few chapters. I felt initially that the story wasn’t going anywhere and I thought maybe this was just going to be about a girl in rehab. On a positive note, the ending to the book was good and it did come together well in the end but getting there was just a bit of a slog. Fast forward to bagdad 2003, and the terrible find the soldiers make. A secret underground lab, complete with surgical room and horrible deaths of prisoners, including mass graves. The premise sounded interesting but it was quite predictable; each woman is not only struggling with personal issues relating to their pregnancies but nearly all of them have secrets that would directly impact their lives and those around them. Also in the stories of Daniel we see the investigative judgment and the executive judgment portrayed in Belshazzer’s feast. The message comes in blazing letters upon the wall. “You are weighed in the balance and found wanting.” Belshazzer’s life, as well as the kingdom of Babylon had been investigated by God, they were found wanting. And then the executive judgment took place, and Babylon the great, fell.

Really very good! The premise seemed a little too familiar at first but I’m always happy to be proved wrong and pleasantly surprised. A group of people are holed up in a remote location, in this case a rehab centre in a deliberately inaccessible desert location. Our main character doesn’t remember how she got there or why and can’t work out why anyone would sponsor her the huge fees to be there either.

In vain they do worship me,” Jesus says, “setting aside the COMMANDMENTS OF GOD and following their traditions.” Andrew Hunter Murray is a writer from London. His first novel, The Last Day, is a high-concept thriller set in a world whose rotation has slowed to a halt. The Last Day will be published in the UK and USA in February 2020 by Penguin Random House. She finds herself at The Sanctuary, an alternative to standard rehab and a place where the very wealthy go to try and sort out their lives. She’s been admitted to avoid being charged with a crime but has no idea who has arranged for this and more importantly, who paid the extortionate fees. She does have her demons, and the more time she spends there the more she starts to open up and realise she could benefit from this stay. Until things start to get strange. Very few people have the opportunity to stay at The Sanctuary, even less manage to leave. The most compelling aspect of the novel is its theme, urging us to assess not only the benefits, but the consequences and responsibilities of living lives much longer than those afforded us by current actuarial tables. The novel wisely suggests our instinctive desire for materially extended lifespans be contemplated with as much focus on the qualitative as on the quantitative. It may not be so axiomatic whoever breathes longest, breathes best. For the retreat is far from relaxing, and with everyone including the people running it having secrets it was clear nothing would particularly go to plan. For most, a lounger is more than enough luxury but if you want to treat yourself, a cabana can be booked for up to four people. The therapy sessions are a little non conventional and secrets and mystery from the pasts of the patients start to leak out and the peril starts to mount. The Sanctuary: A gripping and twisty thriller full of dark

Nothing makes sense to Zoey. She doesn't believe that she needs rehab, she admits that her life is a bit dead-end, constant moving about and low-paid, unskilled jobs, a lot of alcohol, the odd bit of hash, but nothing she cannot handle ... she believes. So to sum up, I enjoyed it, it was well crafted, intelligently and well written, but whether it is me just finding so many audiobooks a bit "meh" these days or just a good book not being quite my thing, this did not blow me away An intriguing mystery with a tense setting, The Sanctuary has a brilliant opening scene that instantly fills you with a claustrophobic dread.

As mentioned the story takes place in a yoga retreat for pregnant women. It should allow them to take some time off and focus on their futur role as mothers. This would be fine if not all of them had secrets to hide. Even the people who run the retreat have some deep buried secrets. One by one they come to light. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. Thank you to @hodderstoughton for this advanced copy of The Sanctuary by @emma_haughton_writes in return for an honest review. In the beginning I was intrigued by the idea of pregnant women who visit a retreat. But honestly, towards the ending the story got a bit too much for me.
