It’s built for HomeKit and the future, with support for Thread, the new low-power wireless mesh networking protocol. And, as of a recent firmware update, it’s now Matter compatible, so will work with other Matter compatible systems (we’ve tested it with SmartThings). More so, the plug should blink rapidly to show it’s ready to connect to a Wi-Fi network. If your TCP plug isn’t blinking blue rapidly, press and hold the Power button for about 5 seconds or so. Release the button when you notice the LED indicator light blinks rapidly.

All you need is a linux box (A Raspberry pi 3 works fine, although I had issues getting it to work with the ver4) Designed to work with the Philips Hue lighting system, the Philips Hue Smart Plug can work with either Zigbee (if you have a Hue Bridge) or Bluetooth. The former is the best option, and we recommend this smart plug for those that have a full Hue system. There are two main reasons. First, Zigbee has better range and reliability than Wi-Fi and, secondly, if you have a network failure, you can still operate the smart plug using a Hue remote control. Perhaps a little late to this, but for anyone else looking at these devices for a 4way controllable smart device (I’ve no idea why in the UK these seem so rare!)

Also available through the app are Tap To Run and Automations. Both are created in the same part of the interface, only you have to select Tap To Run as the Condition for the former. Tap To Run offers a manually triggered set of commands – say, turning on the smart plug and setting it to run for a certain length of time. The slider for Tap To Run only presents this time in seconds, making it difficult to work out how many minutes it will run for.

Nevertheless, such a command is useful. For example, in my best uses for smart plugs article, one option listed is for charging tools. With a Tap To Run, you can set the plug to come on and turn off automatically when the batteries are charged. We test smart plugs in the same way, so that we can compare different models from different manufacturers. For each plug we make sure that we connect it via all methods available. We also see how easy it is to plug in other devices next to the smart plug.
