About this deal

Interesting, this is not a speaker I'd necessarily read as 'bright' from the measurements, and it measures quite well, especially if listening off axis. Would these sound bad if I put them on a 1x12 shelf? All around the shelf is open, but there would only be about 3" between the speaker and drywall.

The Sony SSCS5 Bookshelf Speakers are an excellent option for those looking for an affordable and well-rounded audio solution. They’re ideal whether you’re a casual listener or those just starting to build your home audio setup. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. The 5.25-inch woofer performs well, though it won’t galvanize listeners with a passion for bass-heavy music. Services availability depends on region. A part or whole of software/services installed into or accessible through the product may be changed, discontinued, removed, suspended, or terminated without notice. The Sony SS-CS5 is a capable performer. Useful bass response extends to 50 Hertz and treble response extends to beyond audibility. The imaging is quite good allowing for decent instrument location and depth. The design integrity is what one would expect from more costly speakers. The only quibble I found was that of a slight reticence in the high frequencies above 5 kilohertz or so. This was remedied by lessening the value of the super tweeter padding resistor to enhance the highest frequencies. The systems I use for comparison are as follows: JBL L-112, Genesis 1+, The Smaller Advent and JBL LX330. These comparison systems all much larger and one is more than eight times as expensive. That being said, the little sony SS-CS5 is a great value that should be considered for deployment in two ... Read more The Sony SS-CS5 is a capable performer. With regard to surround sound/ home theater use, I could care less. When video is co-mingled the audio, any sense of listening pleasure becomes a moot point. The Human brain cannot accurately interpret sound quality while watching murders, bloodshed and scantily clad seductresses prancing about. Amen! But while their performance is decent for the price, they don’t quite match up to the Sony SSCS5 in terms of overall sound quality and clarity. Ultimately, the Sony SS-CS5 makes high-quality listening experiences accessible to anyone, which is why so many music lovers have fallen in love with it over the years. Compared to other bookshelf speakers

The Sony SSCS5 speakers have an impedance of 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 87 dB, making them suitable for pairing with a variety of amplifiers or receivers. The impedance indicates the electrical resistance of the speakers, while the sensitivity represents how efficiently they can convert the electrical signal into sound. Bass reflex system I always look forward to the first few seconds after the speaker plays. Here, I was like "maybe this is not so bad" until another five seconds passed and I said, "man this thing is bright!" It is so bright that if you play music in the dark, you may have to wear sunglasses! It is also muddy to some extent although the brightness gives the impression of detail.Bought these for a record player. We’re new to records and analog setups, but these sound good. They were easy to set up. Haven’t tried the Bluetooth but I suspect it will work perfectly. if I factor in price and give in to my bass-head type personality (secretly wishing these had subwoofer level bass). way, 3-speaker bass-reflex system, 5-1/4inch Foamed-Mica Cellular Reinforced Woofer, 1inch Polyester Main Tweeter

All in all, I'm proud to say I own these and even more proud to tell people what I spent on them. These aren't just great for how much they are, they're great in general. Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money, there's little-to-no audible difference between these and other very high end speakers and I personally recommend getting these speakers if your setup requires bookshelf sized speakers. This is all from my experience recording bands and doing my own recordings/mixing. I would put these up against my Yamaha HS8s for sure! Hard to fault such a small and cheap speaker but still, expect a lot of distortion across the board especially if you turn it up. The speakers are relatively compact, measuring 7.125 x 13.25 x 8.75 inches in size. Because of the three-way design, they are narrow and slim but a touch tall. The SS-CS5 may take up a bit more vertical space than a two-way speaker. It is, however, still rather small. In this post, I've included 2 pictures to highlight the impact of the anti-diffraction frame. Both pictures contain response measurements of the same speaker at 0, 30, and 60 degrees off axis horizontally. One shows the speaker by itself, and the other shows the speaker with the frame added (no crossover modification). The only difference is the frame. It's easy to see that the frame evens out the response significantly between 300 Hz and 3 kHz, while also drastically improving the consistency across horizontal angle in the same frequency region.Whether Hi-res audio has any appeal for you or not, but if you like to listen to music and have a slightly tighter budget, you must consider these Sony speakers. The Sony SS-CS5 is designed to be compact, powerful, and transparent. These characteristics are hard to combine in general, let alone budget-friendly speakers! Yet, the SS-CS5 succeeds in offering a professional sonic performance despite its size simply by overlooking aesthetics.
