About this deal

Optical Quality – Through the lens GX85, 1/400, f/5.6, ISO 200 – Sigma 16mm f/1.4 Pen F, 1/1250, f/2.5, ISO 200 – M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 Sharpness That being said, for hiking or anything else strenuous, it would definitely go into a bag until it was needed, as the weight and front-heaviness does wear down on you after a while. Finally, it is worth considering just how important it is for you to have a focal length as close as possible to the classic 35mm field of view, which is more or less what the 17mm offers with its 34mm equivalent field of view. The Sony 15mm f/1.4 G is a welcome addition to Sony’s APS-C lens lineup. With an equivalent focal length of 22.5mm, this lens will give photographers and videographers who like to keep things wide a nice option. However, it’s clear that Sony is going after Sigma’s 16mm f/1.4 Contemporary.

MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth. To begin, let’s take a look at how the two lenses compare at a long focus distance close to infinity. Reference image Naturally, there’s not a whole of point in having a fast f/1.4 lens if image quality doesn’t hold up when shooting wide-open. As it turns out, sharpness and contrast are maintained very well at the widest aperture. Another bonus is that the wide aperture and short 25cm minimum focus distance enable a fairly tight depth of field and good bokeh, enabling interesting perspective effects. This lens on my camera has a hyperfocal distance of 12.08 meters at f/1.4. So, if I focus that far away, everything from about six meters to infinity should be in focus. Testing this was where I met the lens’ shortfall. There seemed to be a significant drop-off in focus into the distance. However, I soon realized that focusing on subjects with fine detail showed that the lens was soft at f/1.4.

Before we round it all off, I’d like to offer two main alternatives for your consideration. Sony E 15mm F1.4 G The lens hood cuts harmful rays that can negatively affect photographs while also minimizing reflectivity within the hood itself. The hood also features a rubber construction and a non-slip groove to make it easy to hold in a variety of shooting situations. The 17mm is officially listed as having a maximum magnification of 0.08x (MFT) or 0.16x (35mm format), so either way, the specifications go in contrast with the actual results. Here again we can assume that the higher magnification of the Sigma in this real world test is due to more pronounced focus breathing when focusing at the shortest focus distance. Chromatic AberrationThe differences become more salient when we turn our attention to the corner performance. At all values, the Sigma is sharper than the Olympus but the biggest difference is found at the fastest aperture values. Sharpness remains very good across the whole image frame, right into the corners (Image credit: Matthew Richards)

Unfortunately, none of the lenses in Sigma’s trio offer stabilization which is rather unfortunate for video users.

Sell the kit you’re not using to MPB. Trade in for the kit you need to create. Buy used, spend less and get more. Buy. Sell. Trade. Create. A bright prime lens is the ideal way to experience the essence of the art of photography. Simply select a focal length that matches the image and enjoy complete control of the depth of field. There was no sign of barreling. Note, the walkway on this bridge slopes slightly from the center to the edges to drain water. It's not lens distortion. We didn't experience very much "hunting", either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing almost all of the time. It's also a very quiet performer, thanks to the built-in stepping AF motor, which makes this lens well-suited to video recording.

Newsletter Signup Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.Let’s talk about sharpness and image quality! (spoiler alert: the 16mm is often considered one of the sharpest lenses ever made for Sony APS-C) Wide Open Weighing in at a modest 380g, without hood or caps, the lens is by no means a burden. It is supplied with a solid petal lens hood that bayonets cleanly into place. This surrounds a filter thread of 67mm.The only other adornment is the wide, electronically operating, manual focusing ring. This is very smooth and probably best switched off in camera if MF is not being used. Otherwise, the natural grip on the lens barrel also grips the ring, which could be accidentally moved. As the MF function works with the AF system this could be an issue for some. However, as the AF is so fast and silent, thanks to the excellent stepping motor used, there is little motivation for manual focus in general use. One exception could be macro photography, where small manual adjustments to the point of focus can be useful. As this use would probably involve mounting the camera on a tripod, there would be no issue with accidental shifting of the focus point. Astro performance isn’t the main focus of the lens, but it performs pretty well. My Final Thoughts Alternatives The mount features a special sealing to make the lens an excellent choice in a wide variety of conditions.
