Tamkin, who has written extensively about Jewish identity in America, also considers what Barbie creator Ruth Handler’s famous offspring might tell us about the American dream. Great, yeah, Barbie with a dog! Absolutely, what a no-brainer! And she's a lab, which is like a default dog! She comes with a little leash and a dog bowl and biscuits that she… she pops out. And the biscuits look just like it. So you… you uh — you get the idea. Harley Davidson did an entire series of Ken dolls for the Barbie brand and they certainly gave Ken the bad boy look that every motorcyclist in the '90s was known for.
It's not only a Barbie world — Ken dolls have been an iconic part of popular culture for decades, too, with certain editions becoming exceptionally valuable among collectors. These prized dolls often possess unique features, limited production runs or significant historical significance.

Tamkin: Mhm. I mean, we talk about like Barbies of different skin color, but hair is also racialized. And so I think it speaks well of Mattel that they put that attention to detail … Yeah, I mean, it's only appropriate that our conversation about Ken should start with Barbie because, as we say, he only makes sense relative to her. And even the name—you know, Barbie is invented in the 1950s. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon last summer, Ryan Gosling talked about what it was like for him when the world found out he was playing Ken.
