About this deal

A few mobile monitors use traditional power adapters. This is particularly true of models that work with sketch pens and are intended for artists; they are in effect interactive monitors. In a common configuration, the display draws power through an adapter, while two cables connect to the computer. One is HDMI, to handle transfer of the image displayed on the device, and the other is USB (through a USB-A port), to record the pen motions the user makes when drawing on the interactive display. HDMI (usually in the form of mini-HDMI) is also a common port (the most common other than USB-C) on more conventional portable displays. Speaking of bandwidth and resolution, most portable monitors are 15.6-inch panels with a 1080p resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. But more compact models with 11-inch screens are available.

That said, don't go thinking this will give you a larger preview area relative to toolbars and pallets alongside. The display resolution is still Full HD 1920 x 1080, so compared to a 15.6-inch portable monitor with the same resolution, the ROG Strix simply displays everything a little bit bigger. Why all of these panels, all of a sudden? The widespread adoption of USB Type-C connectivity—with its ability to transfer power, data, and video over a single cable—has been a godsend for the growth of portable displays. They no longer need a dedicated AC adapter for juice (though some do come with one as an option), and many have just a single USB-C port that handles all the connectivity, though some add HDMI or other connectors. This 17.3-inch 4K model from Intehill is a bit of a unicorn as there just aren’t a lot of portable monitors at this size with this resolution. Thankfully, it’s also a good looking one. Just be aware that you’ll have to spend a hefty sum for this larger display as well as buy a PSU separately, that is unless you have a Thunderbolt port which can fully power it. We evaluate a monitor with particular attention given to its core image quality, including brightness, contrast, color vibrancy and accuracy. While this can - and will - be assessed by the experienced eye of our professional reviewer, some manufacturer screen specs can only be definitively judged by an 'electronic eye' - a monitor calibrator. Where possible, a calibration device will be placed on the screen to verify its advertised color space coverage, brightness output and consistency, and factory color calibration accuracy. Beyond image quality, we'll also scrutinise the monitor's display and data ports to ensure acceptable connectivity, and will give a thorough assessment of build quality, including the range of ergonomic adjustment in its stand. Only then will we determine if a screen is worthy of use by a discerning imaging or video enthusiast.

Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. Best of all, they don't need to be plugged into the wall, but can be powered from your laptop via USB. And some even have a built-in rechargeable battery, so you don't have to drain your laptop's. (A self-powered portable monitor is also ideal if you want to extend the screen space of your camera phone.) The Original DeskStand ™ Standing Desk, Laptop Stand, Adjustable Standing Desk, Sit Stand Desk, Standing Workstation Desk for Home Office On the positive side, the stereo speakers are powerful and the quality of the image is striking; colours really pop on this display. It also comes with an optional stylus (which is going to be of more interest to computer users looking for a second screen) and remote control which allows you to toggle options more easily. Cons: Fiddly controls, screen is quite dull The "Look Ma, No Wires!" Option: AVA wirelessHD Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo Life We were supplied with review samples of the screens featured in this round-up by the companies who manufacture them. Battery or no battery is another critical question. You can get portable screens both with and without. Screens without a battery are cheaper and lighter. However, if you’re using a mobile screen away from the mains, they will drain your laptop’s battery pretty fast. On the plus side, the display has a matte-style screen which means you get less glare in bright locations, and the design looks fantastic – it reminds us of the iPad Pro in a lot of ways. We also like the cover stand, which is laid flat on the table and has grooves into which the screen 'sits', which means it's highly unlikely to fall over during use. The display quality is decent enough; the Z1 Gamut has 100% SRGB support, and compares favourably to the other screens we tested here. As is the case with the CF011X, there's no touch capability. The design isn't as eye-catching as its rivals, but it's fairly rugged and will withstand some punishment on the road. If you like the idea of a "bridge" screen for your travels but don't want to pay over the odds, this is a good choice.

This monitor arm has a built-in, removable VESA mounting plate, making monitor swapping as easy as original monitor installation. This mounting head can fully rotate, making horizontal and vertical monitor orientations possible without changing mounting screws. They just need to make a connector to display the switch on an iPad. Unfortunately Apple is extremely monopolistic and I doubt this would ever happen. Look for a portable monitor that uses IPS (in-plane switching) LCD technology. This enables much better colour and contrast consistency than older, cheaper, older TN (twisted nematic) panels. Thankfully, most portable monitors now use IPS technology, meaning there shouldn't be an obvious difference in image quality between your laptop's display and the portable monitor alongside it. How we test monitors Over the years, I have reviewed iPad and iPhone science apps, plus the occasional camera, laptop, keyboard, and mouse. I've also written a host of articles about astronomy, space science, travel photography, and astrophotography for PCMag and its past and present sibling publications (among them, Mashable and ExtremeTech), as well as for the PCMag Digital Edition.
