About this deal

For his illustrations, Allsburg got inspiration from Caspar David Friedrich, a German painter from the nineteenth century known for panoramic landscapes featuring silhouetted figures. Allsburg thought Friedrich's paintings had a gloomy feeling, which he matched in his illustrations using brown and violet colors. [1] [2] One Town's Fight to Save Their 40-Foot Yule Goat - by Sarah Gibbens – Yes, really, a Christmas goat The film uses a technology called "performance capture," wherein an actor actually gives a three-dimensional performance which is recorded digitally by a computer, to then be manipulated into animated art. Performance capture is an extension of CGI and, as used in films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, further blurs the line between what is animation and what is special effects. The process seems to work fairly well as far as body movement goes; the animated characters move with genuine lifelike grace that is far superior to previous attempts, such as the animated action sequences in SPIDER-MAN or THE HULK. Indeed, a dance sequence involving a band of hyperkenetic waiters is a showstopper. But the process just does not work as far as detailing facial features. Enjoy a 30 minute performance in a heated marquee before setting off on your 60 minute Polar Express train ride.

Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its "Teacher's Top 100 Books for Children." It also appeared on School Library Journal''s "Top 100 Picture Books" of all time in a 2012 poll. During the journey, you will meet characters from the film, most notably the Polar Express conductor and, of course, Santa. There will be singing and dancing and each passenger will receive a gift. What age is best for the Polar Express train ride? The story is very short indeed, and the use of language not very imaginative. After reading the book, it was interesting to watch the film based on it, which has also been highly acclaimed. Yet that felt strangely long and drawn-out. Yes, the story had been expanded, but it still had no depth, which it certainly needed to maintain its feature length. How many children would be able to sustain over an hour of grey fuzziness and mere expectation of possibly meeting Santa? And that droning, sentimental music! Again, "The Snowman" does it better, and the decision to keep it at a mere 20 minutes was a wise one. However it is the book of The Polar Express which is reviewed here, not the film. That said, the whole experience is very similar to all of the other Polar Express train rides with singing and dancing Polar Express characters.

I mean can it be any more winter vibe, let's get in the holiday mood, I can't wait to ride the train scenario? National Education Association (2007). "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". Through dark forests, over tall mountains, and across a barren desert of ice, the Polar Express makes its way to the huge city standing alone at the top of the world, where the boy will make his Christmas wish.I have been wanting to read this book for some time - if for nothing else but for the amazing artwork that Chris Van Allsburg created for this book. This is the sort of children's picture book I am sure would have got me hooked on reading at a much earlier age - the artwork is both so easy on the eye and yet has a mystical quality I cannot quite put my finger on.

On arrival at the North Pole, you’ll catch a sighting of Santa’s sleigh, a bag of toys and a giant Christmas tree and, of course, the man himself, Santa who will present each passenger with their very own “First Gift of Christmas”, a silver bell from his sleigh.

I've seen the movie a few years ago, but when I read this for storytime at work, it was my first time to actually read the story. Excellent art and sweet story...but I don't quite agree with the emphasis on "believe in Santa"... Could be a little confusing for small kids—unless, of course, you're intending to make them believe fully in Santa as the bringer of gifts. It pairs very nicely with the movie.
