Inquiries Journal provides undergraduate and graduate students around the world a platform for the wide dissemination of academic work over a range of core disciplines. Thirty-two undergraduate students (twenty-five females, seven males), ranging in age from 20 to 41 years from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) at Shady Grove participated in this study. Participants were selected from a psychology class and received extra credit for their participation as agreed on by the class’s instructor. All students participated on a voluntary basis. Music and Silence,’ by Rose Tremain. | H.E Book Review: ‘Music and Silence,’ by Rose Tremain. | H.E

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” – Victor Hugo Malakoutikhah A, Dehghan M, Ghonchehpoorc A et al. (2020) The effect of different genres of music and silence on relaxation and anxiety: a randomized controlled trial. EXPLORE 16(6):376–371The composer instructed: "In a situation provided with maximum amplification, perform a disciplined action. The performer should allow any interruptions of the action, the action should fulfill an obligation to others, the same action should not be used in more than one performance, and should not be the performance of a musical composition." [8] Musician and choir master Chandra explores the gaps between the notes, the ‘general pauses’ as they are called in classical music.

Marooned in the 17th century | Books | The Guardian

That which, within our present-day music, most nearly approaches the essential of the art, is the Rest and the Hold (Pause). Consummate players, improvisers, know how to employ these instruments of expression in loftier and ampler measure. The tense silence between two movements— in itself music, in this environment—leaves wider scope for divination than the more determinate, but therefore less elastic, sound.Non-Communicable Diseases Research Center, Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences, Rafsanjan, Iran He sets our expectations in bar 3 with pairs of 16th-notes, which at first cry alone (with rests underneath). The other voices join in a crescendo to a passionate downpour at bar 4. After a bit of soothing (especially from the cello’s parallel sixths under the first violin), stark fragments take over at bar 5. There is no real break in the sound for the next three bars, but the music is skeletal and bleak, with gaping registral spreads. After a loud wail in the top voice at bar 8, all the voices regroup, but run into a deceptive cadence on the third beat of the next bar. Now the sound stops. What to do? Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.” – Sarah Dessen

Corresponding author So far we have looked at rests, which take the place of a single note or multiple, and tacet markings, which tells the musician not to play for a long time. Tremain studied with the late Angus Wilson, and the influence of his fertile imagination has clearly helped shape, and energize, her own. Music & Silence may be her best yet. Betz, Marianne (1999).
