But when they arrive they discover something they didn't expect: there's a new member of the Wong family. Also travelling on the SS Hatshepsut is a mysterious society called the Breath of Life: a group of genteel English ladies and gentlemen, who believe themselves to be reincarnations of the ancient pharaohs. Three days into the cruise their leader is found dead in her cabin, stabbed during the night. I loved Stevens's tale of 'pashes', shrimps (the lower years) and the midnight weird food combination of chocolate cake and cow's tongue (a match for Blyton's feast combo of prawns and ginger cake). In fact, her plot is far pacier than a Malory Towers story. Her conclusion is wonderfully far-fetched but satisfyingly unpredictable. I did not guess whodunnit. Ripping good fun The Times

As there are police at the scene, they hand the diary over, the policeman understands everything and holds a denouement (the final part of the book, unveiling the murderer) and they finally arrest the murderer. A Murder Most Unladylike 2.Arsenic for Tea 3.First Class Murder 4.Jolly Foul Play 5.Mistletoe and Murder […]When Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong set up their very own deadly secret detective agency at Deepdean School for Girls, they struggle to find any truly exciting mysteries to investigate. (Unless you count the case of Lavinia’s missing tie. Which they don’t, really.) I am 74 and have given it to my 12 yr. old granddaughter who's away at boarding school. I thought it was a wonderful read and reminded me of my days at Wycombe Abbey. This great intro to whodunits for young girls also is a lot of fun for adult fans of the grandes dames of detective fiction ( Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and so on). Much about this mash-up of English-cosy mystery and boarding-school saga is straight from central casting, but a big plus in MURDER IS BAD MANNERS is the mini-novellas and character sketches author Robin Stevens tosses off in a few sentences, such as Hazel's description of how she came to be at Deepdean: Two young would-be detectives, Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells, form a Detective Society and find themselves investigating a variety of crimes in a variety of locations.

Then, the next day at Prayers, the other students also notice the absence of their science mistress, but they are satisfied when the headteacher informed them that she has received a resignation letter from Miss Bell. Following this, Miss Tennyson has also died. A note was beside her corpse, stating that the murderer was sorry, but she knew she had to do it. Daisy and Hazel, however, are not. They work tirelessly to piece the clues together and solve the mystery. How do the popular girls at your school treat the less glamorous ones? Which ones are mean, and which ones are kind to everybody? How do you feel about the way they act? The perfect book for all Detective Society fans and avid readers of the Murder Most Unladylike series. The Case of the Missing Treasure: [ rating from when already read upon publication prior to the release of death in the spotlight] 4.25* - it's a nice change reading from daisy's perspective but i prefer hazel's lol Towards the end of the book, Hazel and Daisy come across an old notebook, which turns out to be the diary of another character Verity Abraham, the girl who was rumored in the story to have committed suicide by jumping off the Gym balcony the term before Hazel arrived . The diary serves as evidence that Miss Griffin, the headmistress has spoken to her a few weeks ago and informed her that she was Verity's true mother and that Mr. and Mrs. Abraham had adopted her. Miss Griffin had become an unmarried mother, which at the time was not considered normal and would have affected her chances of becoming headmistress. Verity forbids this fact, but Miss Griffin then provides her with evidence of her birth and the adoption, too. Then, she asks Verity to join her as her daughter, but Verity denies it and says Mr. and Mrs. Abraham are her parents. Afterwards, Verity had received a note from Miss Griffin, which was found in the diary. Then, after she met Miss Griffin, she disappeared, which was when Verity was said to have committed suicide. Following this, there is a note proving who the murderer is at the end, written by Miss Bell. Miss Griffin would have disposed of it if not for Miss Bell hiding it.

While I figured out the killer, I didn’t know why. The highlight of the book for me was everything that came after, MASTERFULLY done!!

It also won a 2015 Waterstones Children's Book Prize in the 5-12 Fiction category. [7] Sequel and Series [ edit ] I have to admit, for a good part of the book, I was turned off by the racism and by Daisy’s bullying of Hazel. Then it hit me. Why SHOULDN’T it be there? Both are reality. While we’re used to it not being included in books to help “take us away from reality,” we also need books that meets the ugly realities of the world head-on. i don't really have much to say about this like i did for Death Sets Sail - i think that this was more a bridge into the new series than a commemoration of what had already happened in the murder most unladylike series, but the short stories were still fun and the author's notes at the end were :,)))But then Hazel discovers the Science Mistress, Miss Bell, lying dead in the Gym. She thinks it must all have been a terrible accident – but when she and Daisy return five minutes later, the body has disappeared. Now the girls know a murder must have taken place . . . and there’s more than one person at Deepdean with a motive.

Coming from Asia and moving to England in the 1930’s made Ms. Wong an oddity who isn’t readily accepted by her new schoolmates. However, Ms. Wells soon grows to appreciate how smart the new student is and they become best friends. Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong are pupils at Deepdean School for Girls, best friends - and detectives. Or, at least, they would be, if they could find any interesting cases to solve. Then the body of their teacher, Miss Bell, is discovered in the school gym, and the girls must put their detective skills to the test at last . . . The Hound of Weston School: 5 stars - I love the Junior Pinkertons (especially Alexander bc he’s just so nice for no reason) and his relationship with Hazel is so cute - the end of the letter was *insert keyboard smash* Loved “Wig in the Window”! This sounds similar and so fun. Girls! Solving crimes! I’m getting ahold of this book today! Deepdean School for Girls, 1934. When Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong set up their very own deadly secret detective agency, they struggle to find any truly exciting mysteries to investigate. (Unless you count the case of Lavinia’s missing tie. Which they don’t, really.)
