Consider using a teat that is more suited to paced bottle feeding. This means it will hold enough milk when held in a horizontal position, rather than have to be tipped up so your baby can access the milk. However, most mothers often face the challenge of not knowing the right time to change their baby’s teat. The following are signs that indicate the teat is too slow for the baby or signs that shows a baby needs a faster flow teat. If they can't control the rate of feeding, they are more likely to over-feed. Non-responsive feeding has been associated with discomfort and fussiness in the short term (NHS 2021) and linked to obesity in the longer term (Hurley, 2011; Watchmaker 2020). Hi I moved Hayden to the Tommee Tippee Variflow at 6 weeks - basically he then controls the speed and volume of milk in each gulp - it took him a couple of days to get used to them (milky face due to being greedy and not realising so much would come out) but he is great with them now and no need to move him to another set at a later date

The Newborn teat (with the number 1 on the teat) is recommended for babies of 0+ months old that are breastfed and bottle-fed. If your baby is not doing well on a particular flow rate, and you’ve tried changing it, it may be time to switch to another brand. Dr Brown’s Slow flow is generally preferable for newborns, while you’re both learning how to feed. If the flow rate is too fast it makes paced feeding more difficult. In which case babies would have very little control over how they feed: milk would flow into their mouth faster than they can swallow it. This might make your baby cough or splutter, or struggle to keep up with the flow of milk so it dribbles to the side of their mouth. This could also mean they feel upset, get indigestion and bring up lots of milk. How many bottles and teats do I need?

We have medium flow teats, which most babies are ready for at around 3 months, and a fast flow teat which is best from around 6 months. The ages are only guides though – you know your baby better than anyone and will be able to tell when they’re ready for a faster flow. Scheel, C. E., Schanler, R. J., & Lau, C. (2005). Does the choice of bottle nipple affect the oral feeding performance of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants?. Acta paediatrica (Oslo, Norway : 1992), 94(9), 1266–1272. Available at https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1651-2227.2005.tb02087.x my OH works long hours so im pretty much making all these decisions on my own...i know teat size is a trivial decision but im just not confident in making choices no matter how small! Hegen's teats are designed to encourage seamless transition from breast to bottle feeding, minimising nipple confusion for your baby. Many parents want to know ‘which brand of baby bottle is best?’ The fact is there is no independent research showing differences in feeding ability or pattern from different brands of bottles or teats (Which, 2021; Scheel, 2005). It’s down to you and your baby to see what works for you. Here’s an overview of the main types of bottles available on the market: Basic bottles
