In other words, Adam Jentleson’s book is perfectly timed and aptly subtitled. Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy is an authoritative and well-documented plea for abolishing a 19th-century relic used to thwart the majority’s agenda.

Things really go off the rails once Mitch McConnell gets involved. This was my favorite part of the book - I always enjoy reading about how awful he is.As for the Senate’s current minority leader, Kill Switch reminds the reader of an earlier McConnell quote: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” A dubious distinction, but one Donald Trump would instead come to hold. Mom?” I call again, itching at the tights on my legs as the costume I’d been wearing since this morning chafes my skin. “Mom?” The book begins with the history of the filibuster. For me the first part was a slog because I am more interested in modern history, but in retrospect it was necessary to refute those who wish to misconstrue the intentions of the Framers. Later chapters outline the evolution of cloture rules and the decline of bipartisinship in the senate due to the increasing power given to party leaders and loosening rules regarding conflicts of interest. Although clearly left-leaning, the author does try to be fair and points to his former boss and mentor Harry Reid's role in the former.

But that’s not what’s coming. The modern Senate can be boiled down to McConnell's obstruction. And he had help. For his first senate campaign With his prospects looking grim, McConnell decided to put himself in the hands of Roger Ailes. At the time, Ailes was a TV consultant, making ads for Republican candidates. McConnell wanted an ad that would shake up the race, he told Ailes, and suggested positive ones that would introduce him to voters. Ailes shot them down. “Do you want to look nice, or do you want to take out your opponent and win this thing?” Ailes asked. “I want to do what it takes,” McConnell replied.Vile. Later, before the tragedy of what would be the results of the 2016 election, McConnell said “I want the American people to be comfortable with the fact that the Republican House and Senate is a responsible, right-of-center, governing majority.” Now that is laughable. On healthcare, he directed that no Republicans support the bill so as to prevent any claim to "bipartisan" - "In what was once the 'world’s greatest deliberative body,' a complex policy issue governing 15 percent of America’s economy was boiled down to a binary political calculation. 'If he [Obama] was for it,' as former Republican senator George Voinovich said, 'we had to be against it.'" Adee, Sally (May 1, 2008). "The Hunt for the Kill Switch". Treadmills [23] often use a safety key with one end magnetically attached to the machine and the other end clipped to the user's waist. If the safety key is pulled out, such as in the event of a fall, the treadmill stops immediately. In other cases, some other treadmills have a more traditional kill switch, often mounted towards the rear of one of the hand railings. [24] [25] Amusement rides [ edit ] Jentleson makes a strong case that the Framers intended majority rule to prevail in the Senate, with a few explicit exceptions, such as the two-thirds vote to convict on impeachment. Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could’ve done. It didn’t matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I’d have time to disappear before he got out or he’d cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.

A fairly interesting refresher on the history of the US Senate. There's quite a big jump made after Johnson's term as Majority Leader—which Jentleseon explains, but is still odd. Given that today's Republicans would rather overturn US democracy rather than lose an election, it seems unlikely that much will change with the Senate or the electoral college, but perhaps some of todays' Senate Democrats will read this and learn something. Ahem. Davies, Chris (September 19, 2009). "Microsoft remote software "kill switch" confirmed". SlashGear . Retrieved May 10, 2017. Spotting a group of white, I see my friends, all similarly dressed, since we’d just performed in our recital earlier today, run behind some hedges. They’re huddled together, giggling, and my sister, three years older than me, is in the middle of them. I only hesitate a moment before I take a step, following them. She’ll be so scared, she won’t even be safe in her own head by the time I’m done with her. And the best part is I won’t have to break into her home to do it. In the twenty-first century, Senate Republicans have represented a minority of the population every year, despite holding as many as fifty-five seats, as they did from 2005 to 2006 These days, the author hangs his hat at Democracy Forward, a political non-profit chaired by a Democratic super-lawyer, Marc Elias, which includes on its board John Podesta, a veteran of the Clinton and Obama White Houses. Ron Klain, now Joe Biden’s chief of staff, was once treasurer. The group’s targets have included Ivanka Trump and her alleged ethics violations. The smell of earth fills my lungs as I breathe in, and even though the ground is covered with grass, dirt scuffs my slippers, and I shift uncomfortably. They’re going to be ruined now. I know it. The book gives us an historical recounting of how the Senate developed into the hot mess it has become. From Calhoun and the slavers to Johnson and Russell, to Reid and McConnell.

Kill Switch review: how the Senate filibuster props up Kill Switch review: how the Senate filibuster props up

Beyond the house and party, the land opens up into a vast lawn, lined and dotted with flower beds to my right and left as well as trees and rolling hills in the distance. It spans far and wide and looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Success!

As the Senate grew and changed, one constant remained: the role of party leader was at best a figurehead. In 1878, the New York Times noted that the Senate had no “distinctly recognized leaders.” … to deal with the challenges of memberships and workloads that continued to grow, Senate Democrats created the formal position of leader in 1920 and Republicans followed in 1925 … This was true until 1952, when Richard Russell anointed Lyndon Johnson as the Democratic leader. Negative partisanship combined with the filibuster gives conservatives a distinct advantage. Unlike Democrats, Republicans aren't trying to pass sweeping new programs for health care or other things. Under the current filibuster, the GOP can still achieve its top three priorities: approval of tax cuts, approval of conservative judicial nominees, and the ability to prevent Democratic social programs from passing. The waitstaff clears silverware while glasses clink, and I glance up at the darkening sky, seeing the clouds cover the sun and cast a shadow over the party. Perfect for the candlelight. And it’s too dark. Even worse today with the house only lit by candlelight. I suppose it’s Madame’s way of making everything look like a dream the way she kind of looks herself: surreal, too perfect, and porcelain. Not exactly real. All the bad news about the dysfunctional US Senate collected in one place. Harry Reid is as much to blame as Mitch McConnell, but they both stand on the shoulders of giants. Our aspiration is to be a nation of laws but Jentleson conclusively proves that we have never been other than a nation of men, mostly old white Southern men who have seen the writing on the demographic wall for 200 years. They're terrified of losing power, and they can count. Jentleson has a solution, if only anyone in Congress will read it and act on it. It could save the republic.
