The solo organistrum was known from Spain and France, but was largely replaced by an improved variant, known as a symphonia, in the 13th century, a small box-shaped version of the hurdy-gurdy with three strings and a diatonic keyboard. These keys were much more practical for faster music and easier to handle; eventually they completely replaced keys pulled up from above. Medieval depictions of the symphonia show both types of keys. I bought this book because it was billed in the press as being one of the funniest historical fiction books of recent times. It isn't.

In fact he would lead us to believe that he was the forefront of every movement social, musical or otherwise that occurred from 1960's onward.

Much of the humour in Hurdy Gurdy stems from Diggory’s twisted logic, such as his reasoning that the deadly pox prefers to travel north, or the many deceptively pious excuses he comes up with for his newly rampant libido. When he’s left to fill a mass grave, he typically overthinks and arranges the bodies according to Pythagoras’ theorem, to economise on space. During the late Renaissance, two characteristic shapes of hurdy-gurdies developed. The first was guitar-shaped and the second had a rounded lute-type body made of staves. The lute-like body is especially characteristic of French instruments. Donovan's autobiography was quite the revealing read. Leaving home at 16 he scraped and got by doing odd jobs, sleeping outdoors at times, taking drugs and free to do what he wanted to do. He learned to play the guitar and became a super star with such songs as "Mellow Yellow", "Sunshine Superman", "Season of the Witch", etc...and goes on to meet the likes of Joan Baez, Dylan, The Beatles, etc...There is animal death and abuse, and also loads of body odours, "juices" (ew) and excrements. Wilson has good fun with this, presenting what passed for leading scientific knowledge at the time -- much of it, unsurprisingly, hair-raising when considered from a modern perspective, but plausible enough at the time.
