Long answer: I want to cut directly to what makes me love this book so much: several adults in Trev's life, blood relation or not, make it clear to him that they are always there for him if he needs help. And in turn, Trev makes multiple attempts to go to the adults in his life to get help; when he doesn't receive the kind of help and advice he expects, he is hurt and becomes cold to certain authority figures, but the adults NEVER give up offering their help. In fact, a few of the adults come together to make sure they can meet Trev at his level to figure out how to best to make him feel safe.

Weaknesses: I can appreciate why Maldonado made this a bit more contemplative than his other titles, but I also know that the "train surfing" in Tight was a big draw for my readers! I wish that we would have seen more of the mother in the story, since Trev is clearly very fond of her, and her experience with the stepfather drives so many of Trev's actions. Hardcover First Ed. Hands, Torrey's latest middle grade book coming out in January, is his best one yet. It is one of the best books I have read in 2022, and I don't say that lightly, I read a lot of books.

In his latest book, Head, Hand , Heart: The Struggle for Dignity and Status in the 21st Century, David Goodhart explores what he argues is the dark underside to this sociological revolution, via interviews, anecdotes and an impressive depth of research. Britain and America in particular, he suggests, suffer from a societal condition he describes as “Peak Head”, where cognitive achievement acts as a sorting mechanism in a supposed meritocracy. Along the way, we have devalued both technical, practical abilities (hand), and social and empathetic skills (heart), while alienating and demoralising the people who do the jobs that require them. A handbook is a collection of facts, information, instructions, and significant details about a certain topic. When my old school went from grammar to comprehensive in 1972, the headmaster, Frank Brewin, felt he should prepare the ground with the existing cohort of pupils, which included my brother. He warned them not to look down on the new intake from the local secondary modern, saying: “Some people are good with their heads, and some are good with their hands. That’s just the way things are.”

What a beautiful MG book that hits the nail on the head in relation to our young male students who feel the need to be “the man of the house”. I used to see it all the time when I worked as a social worker and then when I was a teacher in the classroom in a low socio-economic school district. Maldonado does an amazing job of showing how our actions have consequences and how we are perceived by those actions to those around us. It writes like a Jason Reynolds novel and is short in length—both HUGE benefits for our struggling readers, as well as those students who are apathetic about reading and for book clubs in general. This book needs to be out NOW, but we will wait impatiently for 1.24.23.
