About this deal

By far the biggest change in terms of GF3 handling is the omission of the thumb push-wheel. I really missed this control: using the A and S modes and program shifting in P mode is just a little less natural when you have to shift your thumb down to the control wheel. To be fair, the GF3’s touch screen reduces the need for physical buttons and it isn’t the only manufacturer to simplify the control layout. It’s also interesting that both Olympus and Sony have reserved touch screens for their higher-end ILC models – the E-P3 and NEX-5N, opting for customisable buttons on the entry-level E-PL3 and NEX-C3 instead. Personally, I love buttons, but I think Panasonic has got the right idea and a simplified button layout with functions migrated to the touch-screen will appeal more to the market the GF3 is aimed at. The top of the GF3 has a microphone, monoaural speaker, cleverly designed built-in pop-up flash, dedicated button for the Intelligent Auto mode which lights blue when turned on, tactile shutter button, on/off switch, and a one-touch movie button. The Panasonic GF3 has a dedicated button for opening the cleverly designed pop-up flash. Given the small size of the GF3, fitting a built-in flash was no mean feat, as proven by the double-hinged design which is quite a technical achievement. Although not particularly powerful with a guide number of just 6.3, the GF3's flash is perfectly adequate for fill-in effects at close-quarters. With the arrival of the GF3, Panasonic further solidifies the distinctions between its existing G-series lineup. The enthusiast-targeted rangefinder aesthetic heralded by the introduction of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 appears for the moment to have given way to a new directive; producing the smallest, lightest G-series camera possible. The move towards smaller, lighter large-sensor cameras with fewer external controls is not limited to Panasonic of course, as both Olympus and Sony are also courting the mass market aggressively. As with all G-series cameras the GF3 offers the full compliment of ‘PASM’ shooting modes alongside the usual range of Scene modes. The GF3 also sports the same iAuto mode seen on the G3 that, while fully automatic, does allow you to take control of depth-of-field, exposure compensation and white balance using simple on-screen prompts. Alongside the new sensor, the GF3 uses the same Venus Engine VII HD image processor found in the GF2. Working in partnership they enable the GF3 to shoot continuously at 4fps at full resolution, and to record 1080i Full HD movies at 25fps. Sensitivity, meanwhile, ranges from ISO 100-6400. Helpfully, there is a dedicated iA+ button on the G3's top-plate and pressing this in any exposure mode switches to Intelligent Auto plus. If you prefer to manually focus rather than use the snappy AF, you can magnify any part of the subject by 1x, 5x or 10x by simply dragging the image around the screen. The final touchscreen ability from an image composition point of view is the ability to release the shutter, with a small icon on the right hand screen enabling this functionality, and then a single on-screen tap all that's required to take the picture. The Panasonic DMC-GF3 uses a resistive touchscreen to provide mode selections, and as such that there is not a mode dial on the camera. Many features are no longer controlled by dials and buttons and wheels, but via the 3-inch touchscreen (460k- dot) at the rear of the unit. [3] At the time of introduction on 13 June 2011, the GF3 was the world's smallest and lightest digital interchangeable lens system camera. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft at the default sharpening setting, and benefit from further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level by tweaking the Film Mode, with five different settings available. The GF3 also gets the Creative Control shooting mode of the G3, which is essentially a series of six digital effects filters: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic and Miniaturisation.

It’s worth bearing in mind that lenses belonging to the Micro Four Thirds camp need to have their focal distances multiplied by two to be described in equivalent 35mm terms. Thus the 14mm lens affords the same field of view as a 28mm lens on a traditional 35mm camera, while the 14-42mm offers the 35mm equivalent of 28-84mm. Portrait / Soft Skin / Scenery / Architecture / Sports / Peripheral Defocus / Flower / Food / Objects / /Night Portrait / Night Scenery / Illiminatioms / Baby 1, 2 / Pet / Party / SunsetGF3 features a newer processor on board, making it slightly better at processing image data, slightly more responsive, better burst and better AF compared to GF1, GF2, G1 and G2. The handlebar is laterally adjustable for use on slopes and height adjustable to meet all user requirements. It is also reversible and can be lowered to considerably reduce the machine’s size. With all the Panasonic cameras I've owned, I've never mounted a hot-shoe flash. The times I use flash are on umbrellas which can be fired with either wireless triggers or I suppose you could slave a flash and fire it from the hot-shoe flash, but I haven't tried this so I don't know if it works.

We like the GF3, but it isn't perfect. It misses out on a silver award by a whisker, due to its aging 12MP sensor, and some questionable design decisions as regards flash and lens mount position. Both issues have the potential to annoy all users, regardless of their experience or their expectations. By ISO 1600 noise is becoming more visible as the image begins to soften, but only at higher magnifications. At more regular sizes images shot at this sensitivity still remain very usable. The Lumix GF3 retains the same shooting modes as its predecessor. Pressing the shooting mode icon displays a screen with, iA, iA+, P, A, S, M, Custom and scene modes. There’s a new addition called Creative Control which, were it on an Olympus, from where it is clearly inspired, would be called Art filters. The GF3’s creative control modes include Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic and Miniature. The drive towards smaller and smaller bodies and lenses in the fledgling Compact System Camera market is similar to the megapixel wars that have dominated compact digicams until very recently. The Panasonic GF3 is now as small as the Sony NEX system if you compare the bodies side-by side, and when you factor in the fact that the GF3 has a clever built-in flash and smaller lenses, it's easy to see the appeal of going with the smaller Four Thirds sensor if you can live with the slightly inferior image quality at higher ISO speeds. Like Panasonic's other CSCs the GF3 is built following the Micro Four Thirds design. This means that it uses a Four Thirds type sensor and that the lens mount is the same as on the current Olympus PEN series cameras. Unlike the Panasonic LX5, however, the Lumix GF3 accepts interchangeable lenses and the reduction in size has, in part, been achieved by a redesign of the lens mount box.We don’t mind admitting that we’re a little disappointed to see the hot-shoe removed from the GF3, as this does lessen the overall flexibility of the camera. The GF3’s internal pop-up flash is rated GN6, which is the same as previous models, but not as powerful as a dedicated flash unit would be. Those who want to keep life simple will appreciate Panasonic's Intelligent Auto plus (iA+) mode which instructs the camera to use its Intelligent Scene Selector to identify the right scene mode to employ. When an appropriate scene mode is identified, the relevant icon is displayed on the top left of the screen. Panasonic Singapore launches Lumix DMC-GF2 micro four-thirds camera".
