The village of Craigellachie was an important hub in whisky’s history as it was here, in 1863, that the railway lines from Lossiemouth (north), Dufftown (south), Keith (east), and the Strathspey Railway (south west) met, allowing rail transport between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth within the region. So little wonder then that most of us are likely looking to spend our hard-earned cash (and looking at the state we’re in today, that’s not even an exaggerated idiom) on value-for-money whiskies rather than on bottles that are, by and large, at least 33% overpriced. The fact that both the 17 and 23yo were put in the premium market as soon as they were initially released in 2014 — in tempore non suspecto, so to speak— means they were not victims of an overnight price hike like we see with some popular Diageo expressions today. This does not, in my book, help their case. Whiskybase B.V. My local spirits shop has a 1995 Craigellachie 21yo Douglas Laing single sherry cask bottling that looks to be superb. I’ve not had the standard range, so I’m wondering how a sherry matured cask might match up to the official bottling. Thoughts? I believe I have a bottle of this – stunning stuff, a lot of the Craigellachie range uses sherry caskets in its maturation so will be a pumped up version as a single cask. Buy!! I expect the taste to be sweet, and it threw me for a loop. I like the taste but it doesn’t match the smell. It consciously makes no concessions to modern-day house rules. Craigellachie is an unapologetic and unique whisky, robust and muscular with a hint of pineapple. The distillery was built in 1891, when the great alfred barnard described our whisky as 'a style seldom met', and we've been old fashioned - in style and flavour - ever since.

Consider this similar product...

This warming dram starts with a nose of oily fruits and peppery spices. Deep dark fruits, heavy sherry influence and dominance. The palette allows the flavours to be fully explored. Sweet pineapple and a nutty spice come through, alongside sweet hazelnuts and oak wood. Its fierce independence and community-focused content is funded by that same community. On the nose: truth be told, based on the color, I initially assumed a bourbon cask, but on the first few whiffs, I'm getting raisins, sun rype bar/fruit roll up, bit of chocolate fudge which tells me that there's a fairly vibrant sherry cask at work here.... bit more time gives me some apple notes and a slight bit of biscuitiness that would hint at some bourbon cask too.... just my guess anyways. Either way, very pleasant and enjoyable nose. great start This is actually a strong and solid all-rounder in my book. Rich and warming, not overly complex, but, having tried it head-to-head with its 13-year-old sibling, definitely more well-rounded and less ‘spiky’.
