About this deal

The problem was partly technical. Bob required eight megabytes of computer memory, which few beginners owned at that point. This kept characters rudimentary. “You were asked to make a movie, basically, with a box of colored pencils,” says Reeves.

The Digital Desires Inbox, Volume 1: Taken by the Tetris

The book itself is published by a small press by Forest City Pulp that describes itself as publishing "provocative content by provocative writers, specializing in short fiction and serialized stories". So, it's not by a Romance publisher, or one that says it published works by Romance authors. Clippy is, of course, the helpful (and long-since retired) personal assistant for Microsoft Office users, the animated paper clip with googly eyes who popped up on our computer screens and asked unsolicited questions like “It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like help?” The support showed up in real life, too. At client dinners, on trains. The artist hadn’t quite fathomed the ubiquity of his paperclip until all those memes and encounters. Some even tried to claim credit for the original design. Atteberry would send files to Microsoft’s legal department to prove he was the sole designer. “It’ll probably be mentioned when I die, the creator of Clippy or whatever,” he realized. To me, the cover of the book also doesn't read like something that would line up with the rest of the Romance genre. Love, Laugh Lich by Kate Prior is a book I'd say is Romance proper yet is also funny in nature, and it features a clinch between the MMC and FMC. This book's cover has a woman in her underwear, Clippy, and text/colour choices that don't remind me of Romance.Leonard. Leo. Nardman.... what is actually going on here. This was something else. I... I don't know what to SAY? To me, a book that's trying to make fun of something should actually be familiar with the thing it's making fun of. And we get that at some points, like with Phil offering to cuddle for warmth with Christie before Christie rejects him. But as I mentioned earlier, there's enough about the book that doesn't read as Romance of me for me to doubt whether Delaney is at all familiar with Romance or erotica beyond romance-with-a-small-r tropes found outside of the genre. And I think it makes the humour less effective. Reading this was a group effort and I think all of us ended this story with more questions than with which we began. But Bob bombed. Swiftly. Trade magazines, all-powerful gatekeepers then, lampooned it as too basic.

Favourite part was in book 3 when you find out the iwatch is inhabited by the spirit of Steve Jobs; leading to this absolute gem of a line. Today the artificial intelligence of Cortana, Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant can constantly get smarter. Clippy was only as bright as the next edition of Office. LD: Clippy could achieve all of them. He'd have trouble with the “H2Ohh Yeah” though, because he’d rust. Conquered by Clippy is a 4000 word short story featuring sexual situations with digital assistants. It's for super mature audiences only. Some parts were funny but I think it was taken way too over the top to be entertaining enough for what I was expecting. The idea was there - Clippy the Word assistant and his ridiculous “I see you’re trying to do this.. can I assist you?” spiel going on. But the author just tried too hard, I think. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-71-conquered-by-clippy/id653974464?i=1000396403590 External-identifier

Good grief, someone has written an erotic book about Clippy

In 1987, just over a decade after Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft, she started in Redmond. Four buildings surrounded “Lake Bill” at the HQ that would transform a small farming town 15 miles east of Seattle into a big-tech hub. The first time I tried it, it did nothing. The second time, it didn't help me at all and asked for more money. That was the internal name for Clippy as Office was in development. Sam Hobson, a young program manager, pushed forward with the project even as Bob flopped; like Karen Fries and Barry Linnett, Hobson trusted the research of Nass and Reeves on creating social interfaces. Unlike the leaders of Bob, the Office team didn’t face the unenviable task of building an alternate realm for computer novices. Truly, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, HUHHHH?!?! How does one COME UP WITH THIS LMAO?
