Eric is nog vrij recent een wees geworden - allemaal door de oorlog die gaande is. Hij woont nu bij zijn oma en bezoekt graag zijn oom in de dierentuin van Londen. Dat doet hij overigens stiekem - zijn oom werkt daar en zo besparen ze geld. Hij helpt zijn oom met de dieren en heeft een speciale band gekregen met Gorilla Gertrude. Wanneer er bombardementen gehouden worden, vindt Eric dat het tijd is voor actie. Wat er volgt is een spannend avontuur om Gertrude te redden en veilig te houden in oorlogstijd. There is a unit plan included with the novel broken down into 17 lessons, with activities relevant to each lesson/chapters. There are 31 activities included to align with the chapters, with extension and fast finishers activities available also. Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are included for each lesson and align with curriculum. The activities are designed for students to build skills in responding to texts - such as building vocabulary, predicting, recount, chronological recount, different perspectives and making connections.I agree that children should not be saddled with responsibility for adults. And yet it’s hard to read this story where the boy is naughty. His naughtiness means he’s not there to tell Grandma to go to the bomb shelter so she dies. I hoped that Grandma just forgot her trumpet and would turn up at the end, but Walliams fridges her “because plot”. Legless humor

Overall, I couldn’t help but think that Walliams sees disability as comical without depth. I give Walliams 2 stars for representation of disability. It’s that high because Sid is a lovely man who joins Eric on his journey. And no animal, no matter how physically challenged, is euthanized in this story. However, I urge all authors to lift their game and represent disability instead of using it to service ableist humor. Illustrations There are three types of gorilla – the eastern lowland, western lowland and mountain gorilla. All stuff themselves with up to 30kg of leaves, stems and fruit each day, but some also eat insects, snails and tree bark!

Along their dangerous and exciting journey, they discover a sinister Nazi plot which would destroy all of England’s defence and power in one foul swoop. Where to go? Who to trust? As increasingly thrilling characters and events are introduced the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions. It was the story though, the usual over-the-top stereotypes, the zany and overdone last act, and as an audiobook listener, some annoying voices that grated. Grandma is “deaf” so, this being the 1940s during World War II, she uses a hearing trumpet. Cue the usual jokes about hearing impaired people misunderstanding others. I think I just miss the heart of Walliams' earliest novels. The ones that felt personal and could actually bring a tear to your eye. And the amount of celebrity authors now following in his footsteps jades me as well.

This is the story of a spy mission with the code name bananas. It all begins with Eric, who loves animals. So much so that his best friend is Gertrude the Gorilla. He teaches Gertrude to blow raspberries. So Grandma yells at him after beating people with her hearing trumpet. Then she takes him home. Given Walliams’s history of Pander[ing] to Prejudice, it’s not surprising that Code Name Bananas uses disability as a vehicle for laughs and plot points. Deafness as comedyPosh zoo directors, freaky vets, terrible twins and playful animals – all this and more feature in this fast-paced tale. The reader will find themselves marvelling at the various creatures that appear in the novel and relating in some form to the grief felt by Eric. As usual David Walliams has done a fantastic job with creating characters to love root for as well as creating funny, evil characters that you enjoy getting to see fail at the end of the story. Hy en Eric deel ‘n groot liefde vir diere, veral vir Gertrude, die gorilla. Wanneer haar lewe in gevaar is, huiwer hulle dus vir geen oomblik om haar te probeer red nie. Hulle avonture met Gertrude van Londen tot by ‘n verlate kusdorpie, agtervolg deur polisie en gekonfronteer deur Nazi-spioene, al die pad tot by Downingstraat 10, word op ‘n skreeusnaakse wyse in hierdie heerlike dik boek (amper 500 bladsye) vir lesers van ses jaar en ouer vertel.
