Chivas Extra 13 Sherry Cask Selection is a rich yet sweet whisky that adds a deeper layer of flavour to the luxurious Chivas house style. A portion of this blended Scotch whisky is matured in Oloroso sherry casks, bringing rich and intense Mediterranean flavours to our whisky. Chivas Extra 13 Rye Cask Selection is a mellow whisky that adds a new layer of flavour to the luxurious Chivas house style. Finishing a portion of our blended Scotch whisky in American rye casks results in long, mellow flavours that are made to be savoured. Nose: Creamy with plenty of vanilla custard, honey and a tinge of Digestive biscuits, followed by an undeniable herbal edge, pineapple and damp oak. Chivas is undoubtedly one of the pre-eminent Scotch blended whiskies, even after the disastrous year they had in 2020. They launched the first luxury blended whisky in 1909 (!) and their current Chivas Regal 12 Years is a staple. They also have a more experimental range, called Chivas Extra 13. They’re all aged to 13 years and selectively finished (more on that later) in different ways; Rum, American Rye, Oloroso Sherry and Tequila. A portion of Chivas Extra 13 Sherry Cask Selection Scotch whisky has been matured in Oloroso sherry casks. According to Hyslop there are all sorts of challenges when it comes to working with the tequila casks for the Chivas Regal Extra 13 Tequila Cask. Some are general challenges, other specific to the cask type. “There’s always a risk of leakage when bringing casks all the way round the world in a container”, he explains. “You also need to make sure that the cask you have coming are in good condition. I always stipulate that I want the casks to be freshly emptied. I don’t want tequila casks that’ve been lying outside for three years and are tequila by name but not by flavor.
