Why the Bushbox Ultralight Firebox is such a great compliment to these alcohol stoves is that it acts as both a pot stand and a windscreen, while still offering the option of cooking with twigs should you run out of alcohol. I've literally fed the Bushbox XL stainless steel version for HOURS, yes hours (2 at least) straight...... basically just feeding twigs into it killing time one evening, It never warped any, so that should help convey the durability. I’ve also used it as a makeshift windscreen before by assembling it without the trivet and setting it upside down over the burner of my canister stove. It was awkward, but it worked. Ultralight and Compact Bushcraft Essentials stoves require almost no care and maintenance but be sure to keep the stove free from dirt and wipe it down from time to time.

Once you are finished cooking, either let the wood burn out by itself, or, using some sort of tongs or hot pad, shake or dump out the wood in a safe place where it can burn out on it’s own. One huge gray area with firebox stoves is whether or not they are considered an “open fire” or not. While this hardly matters in a place where you can have a campfire, in many parks and public lands, open fires are either restricted or outright prohibited. Various notches allow for the Trivets to be inserted in different positions as required and ensure sufficient air supply between flame and cookware. For smaller camp mugs and cookpots, you will want to use the trivet and set them directly on that. I’ve heated up water in my TOAKS 450ml mug this way on many occasions and, while it works great, you do have to be mindful that the mug is going to get pretty hot. Use a hot pad and let it cool sufficiently before trying to drink from it. Here I have gotten one side of the trivet in place. Next I will carefully hold the trivet while pulling out one side plate until it drops and slides into place. The process will be repeated for the remaining side piece. Assembly Options to ConsiderWe think this stove is a novelty item for survivalist types who like to go out on weekends and try different methods to live off of the land. It is also a good item for your zombie apocalypse survival kit. If you run out of white gas for cooking your scavenged cans of beans and whatnot, the Bushbox would work well. In all seriousness — there may be certain thru-hikers who love this stove and could use it to cook Ramen noodles every day — but this would take a lot of diligence and good weather. We definitely recommend reading the directions before using the Bushbox. Value The triangular design makes it fairly stable even with a larger pot. The size though is perfect for a camping personal pot as you can see from the video. I chose wood as a fuel because it is the hardest to use on this but it proved pretty easy even with a bit of wind (as you can hear from the beginning of the video). You can choose to use either the top piece or the dents to put your pot on, depending on the size. I needed very little fuel to boil a cup of water and using little biomass is the main purpose of these little stoves. Also add the ashtray collector piece and it becomes isolated from the ground and therefore safer to use everywhere. With the Bushbox LF you are completely independent, as it can be used in many different ways and is suitable for natural solid fuels (twigs, branches, leaves, charcoal, animal dung) as well as for spirit burners (e.g. Trangia), Esbit tablets, gel cookers, etc.

I have a variety of TOAKS cookware and my 750ml titanium pot fits perfectly in between the small pot holder tabs on each of the side plates. The stove is definitely stainless as there is no rust whatsoever, but mine has lost all its silvery shine. I think it’s still there beneath the burned on tar and grease residue, but I don’t mind the tarnished look. After all, that’s part of the appeal of cooking with a firebox stove. Adapting to Different Kitchen Setups I gave use 4 stars because you have to make sure that the pot you are using fits inside the elevated potrests or is big enough to fit stabil on top of them.
