About this deal

I want to express my gratitude to the Brighton Gin team for an enlightening and enjoyable evening. The hosts were exceptional, ensuring that all attendees were included and their needs were taken care of.

Kathy: We spent a long time perfecting our recipe. It took about two years and was done around our kitchen tables, with many mistakes along the way that I’m not embarrassed to talk about as they’re such a key part of learning. Our Brighton Gin Seaside Navy Strength Gin has dropped anchor for good time gulls and buoys everywhere! At 57% proof, it also holds the juniper flavour better and enhances the botanicals, which means you need less gin in your glass to get that refreshing juniper flavour really pushing through to your taste buds.Brighton Ginis made with 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed and milk thistle. Each bottle is filled, labelled and wax sealed by hand, the distinctive blue/green colour being that ofBrighton’s famous seafront railings. GG: You have been working with Ellie since the outset and she is Chief Gin Peddler for the business – why did you choose this title? Rachel and Jordan were fantastic hosts and ensured we all had a great time. Hardest thing was trying to decide what mix of ingredients we would use to create our own version of Brighton Gin.

The distillation itself takes a day, including hand-peeling fruit and crushing juniper and coriander. Once distilled and adjusted for ABV we rest the gin for a minimum of 24 hours before tasting and signing off. But more romantically, Brighton Gin is distilled in a pub in Brighton. Designed to capture the romance that is quintessentially Brighton, the Milk Thistle, even if it won’t cure/prevent your hangover, is native to the region of England from where it is distilled. #place Tasting Notes A mutual friend introduced Kathy to spirits specialist Helen Chesshire and together they enlisted the help of three other Brighton residents: Ian Barry, a laser physicist turned distiller, Jonathan Ray, drinks editor of the Spectator, and local entrepreneur Nigel Lambe. GG: Being an award-winning freelance broadcaster, producer and presenter, how do you find the time to make gin?Beginning with years of experimentation, different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, award-winning freelance broadcaster, producer and presenter Kathy Caton and her team finally found their perfect blend. One which embodies the spirit of Brighton; unusual, playful and fiercely independent. The Gin Guild talks to Kathy about the story behind Brighton Gin. GG: You have no factory production lines and bottles are filled by hand. How long does it take to produce a bottle of gin and how labour intensive is it?

I read an interesting piece about Brighton Gin sometime ago. It was suggested that Milk Thistle (one of the novel botanicals disclosed) was included because the plant itself contains silymarin, a compound reputed to have beneficial effects on the liver. WebMD says the jury’s out, while academic articles seem to indicate there’s some potential there that is being looked at further. The compound itself isn’t soluble in water, but it is soluble in ethanol. Meaning at higher proofs, you’ll get more of it. [solubility is the factor at play when the Ouzo effect/Louche occurs in higher proof spirits, the addition of water causes certain compounds to come out of solution]. Exceptionally smooth mouth-feel, warmth from the juniper, followed by gentle smooth citrus and distinct orange and lime notes

Brighton Gin was born of a passion for gin and a passion for the place where we live and play - unusual, playful, and fiercely independent. There’s a really rich heritage of brewing and more recently wine-making in this part of the country, but much less so on a distilling front – it’s been amazing to start something new for the city. Brighton Gin is made from 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed, angelica and milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs and renowned for its kindness to the liver function (albeit I have to legally say, most probably not when part of a gin!). It started with months of experimentationwith different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, and more than one or two accidents along the way (but we lived to tell the tale!) and lots of trying out recipes on fellow gin-loving friends until we finally hit the perfect blend.

Head south from London and eventually you'll reach the beautiful city of Brighton & Hove, home to all manner of wonderful things, but one thing in particular that we're rather fond of - Brighton Gin! Produced at the city's first legal distillery, Brighton Gin is built around an organic wheat spirit, and features the likes of juniper, coriander, fresh citrus, and milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs. Brighton Gin is registered with the Vegan Society, meaning everything from the ingredients to the bottle's label is animal free! The producers are also proud of their dedication to ethical and sustainable production methods. In fact, if you hang about the city long enough, you might see someone from the distillery making a local delivery using pedal power on reclaimed and rebranded post office delivery bikes! Kathy: There’s a couple of factors influencing the gin boom – one is the interest in provenance, quality and localism which was led by craft brewing. What’s happening in craft spirits is following that. Kathy and Helen worked on the gin in the early mornings and late evenings between their day jobs and soon found that the realities of craft distilling included 8am tasting sessions of still warm gin from the previous night’s distillation! Their distillation licence was granted on 11 June 2014 and they moved into new premises in a single-windowed room under the Urchin pub in Hove. Each bottle is filled, labelled and wax sealed by hand, the distinctive blue/green colour being that of Brighton’s famous seafront railings. It was a fun experience, ideal as a gift or for anyone simply interested in learning about the gin-making process.Kathy Caton: The idea for Brighton Gin came to me as an absolute light-bulb moment. I was out for a seafront run, the morning after a very late night on the gins (Plymouth Gin to be precise) dancing around a friend’s kitchen table – I got thinking that if I’d been drinking anything other than gin, I wouldn’t have been off my sofa, let alone going for a run!
