When you leave the military, he says, no one sits you down and says: “This is what will happen; this is what you need to do.” The novel's hero Matt Mason is modelled on Billy as he tries to adapt to life after the forces in a Kenyan game reserve where he is working to combat poachers. Hugely enjoyed this book and finding out more about Mark Billingham. Finding out about what motivates individuals like to this to push beyond the normal and achieve amazing things in their lives is something both inspirational and motivational. Reading it you get a personal insight and glimpse in to the life he has lived and what he has experienced.

He’s sitting on a beaten-up old Chesterfield sofa at HR4K, a gym-cum-coffee-hangout on the outskirts of Hereford, where the SAS is based. His British bulldog, Alfie, is snoozing beside him. They both flew over the day before from Florida, where he lives with his second wife, American fashion designer Julie Colombino. HR4K was founded by Ben Garwood, a former SAS operator, and offers the sort of comradeship that Billingham is talking about today. The Special Forces world is all cloak and dagger, no one knows who you are or what you are, says Billingham I’m not a fan of autobiography, so this was never likely to make 5 stars in my opinion. I am however an admirer of Billy and the British Army in general. As a result, he has received numerous awards, including the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery and an MBE presented to Billy byHer Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.Having now read all the books by the ds team of sas who dares wins I would have to say that I enjoyed this one the most. Billy Billingham grew up tough; a grim future ahead of him offering little respite from the hostile streets he walked. But what happened when those service men and women went home with no companions to keep their mood up? “It’s when you’re on your own that the trouble starts,” agrees Billingham. Spotting the signs Matt ‘Mace’ Mason is attempting to put the army behind him, building a life for himself training anti-poaching forces on a Kenyan game reserve. That loss of community and identity coincides with too much time for reflection. Smells, certain songs – it’s unpredictable what will trigger a memory of a traumatic event in your service past.

He supposed that the expense of collecting books inspired him to get himself into reviewing books, and interviewing. In the year 2002, he was in the middle of writing a screenplay for an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and was about to write a screenplay for cult children’s show, but his major consideration turned to writing novels. He explained: "My daughter worked on the Abramovich yacht to start with. I know all the crew on there, so I was happy, and then she started freelancing and going on to other yachts with people I didn't know, that's when it got worrying for me. That's why I was so keen to know exactly where she was."It's all me," said Billy. "I've just made fiction of some of the stuff that I've done. So I can add authenticity to it all. It follows Call to Kill, which is more the military side of stuff. What happened after that is I went into the conservation world. Matt Mason is me, I'm just using those experiences. It’s why Billingham hopes that support for the Tommy Club will help it to build its services for veterans, to foster more communities where veterans can get together, to train, have a coffee and “shoot the s---”. Fantastic. I’m always active and just doing the right thing based on all the things I got wrong in life. Do you split your time between Hereford and Florida? He has been shot at, stabbed and blown up. He’s also been held hostage, as well as successfully negotiating hostage situations. He has lost close friends and comrades while on covert operations all over the world, but some of the most dangerous days of Mark “Billy” Billingham’s life came after he left the SAS. Generally, Thorne’s internal continuity is essential to his author since the events of his past affect the individuals who are in the present. However, this very aspect of his character causes Billingham great difficulty in describing him without giving away plot twists. Scaredy cat
