But six SABU-70 raiders survived the ambush, the deliberate neglect in hospital, the torture, and execution. When the last of them had reached home, it was time to bring the culprits to justice. The hunt for the killers forms the last part of the book, the author going beyond those directly involved in the execution of the SABU-70 raiders (of the 100 or so SAS raiders captured after D-Day, only a handful survived the war) and looks at the SAS’s own War Crimes Investigation Team (WCIT). Even compared to Saving Private Ryan, the operation was huge. The set was five times bigger than anything used for that film. By the time they wrapped the third episode, ‘Carentan’, Band of Brothers had used more pyrotechnics than the whole of Saving Private Ryan. Given that the first episode is mostly set in rural Wiltshire, that’s a lot of ammo. These guys really had it rough. Every turn was danger and the threat of death and torture. They showed out for a cause bigger than themselves. It was very admirable what they did.But this may not be a fair way to look at things. As a show filmed entirely in the UK, “Band of Brothers” was a boon for British actors and industry professionals alike. Lewis has poignantly told the stories of these men and their missions with respect and determination. Some descriptive moments are tough to read, but the “life” of the team and its camaraderie is ever-present. This is a great book about the SAS, their missions and impact during WW2. It is intense to read about their missions and everything they endured as captives of the nazi/SS that actually tortured them and executed many of the SAS soldiers.
