About this deal

Verne (who does, however, deserve respect for his science-fiction) apparently sat down with an atlas, wrote stereotyped vignettes from each region of the world, and strung them together into a lazy sham narrative. Meanwhile, London police officer Detective Fix has a theory that Fogg is actually the thief after hearing about Fogg’s wager, which has made news. Fix’s rumor gains traction throughout the public, especially since Fogg is so quiet and reserved and no one knows much about him. Fix is even more motivated by the reward offered for catching Fogg—2,000 pounds and 5 percent of the recovered money. Fix follows Fogg on his travels, the first stop being at Suez, Egypt, where Fix waits for a warrant for Fogg’s arrest to arrive. She had successfully beaten Fogg by completing the journey in seventy-two days – a new world record. He has a carefully planned route for them to travel by steamer boat and railroad. Their itinerary includes crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and also across several continents. What he does not plan on is that a bank robber left England at the same time they did and a detective mistakes Phileas for the robber and follows them. Around the world in 80 days by Jules Verne was a really good classic novel an the story was filled with adventure, adrenaline and suspense.

In 1956, Michael Anderson directed a film adaptation starring David Niven and Cantinflas. The film won five Oscars, including Academy Award for Best Picture In 2009, twelve celebrities performed a relay version of the journey for the BBC Children in Need charity appeal. An amazing read. You will go on reading until you find out if they really accomplished their mission or not! The story is set in London and is about a rich man named Phileas Fogg who lives a very basic but luxurious life. But one day his whole life turns upside when he embarks on a journey around the world in 80 days with his newly employed French valet Passepartout. Meanwhile with the description of a robber matching Foggs face, detective Fix mistakes Fogg for the thieve and follows him on Foggs crazy adventure around the world on a mission to arrest him. Passepartout heard the street door shut once; it was his new master going out. He heard it shut again; it was his predecessor, James Forster, departing in his turn. Passepartout remained alone in the house on Savile Row.Faith,” muttered Passepartout, somewhat flurried, “I’ve seen people at Madame Tussaud’s as lively as my new master!”

I absolutely loved this! And now I'm wondering, How have I never read this or any of Jules Verne work, for that matter? If to live in this style is to be eccentric, it must be confessed that there is something good in eccentricity! Phileas is a rich man, but also very precise about his life. He wants everything done the way he likes and will get rid of anyone who does not do that. The wager starts when he is at a local club and begins an argument about whether a person could get all the way around the world in such a short period of time. He believes he can because a new railroad has been opened in India. Because he is so sure of his mathematical figures, he takes the wager and sets off with his new valet.

The novel The Other Log of Phileas Fogg by Philip Jose Farmer (1973) tells the secret history of Phileas Fogg's unprecedented trip, in which two alien races contend for Earth's mastery.Aouda is a beautiful Parsee rescued from being set ablaze in a ritualistic sacrifice. When her intended delivery to a relative in China falls flat, she invariably joins the race for the world journey. Her gratitude and admiration toward Fogg grow and develop into much more. The companions arrive at Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland, take the train to Dublin and then a ferry to Liverpool, still in time to reach London before the deadline. Once on English soil, Fix arrests Fogg. A short time later, the misunderstanding is cleared up – the actual robber had been caught three days earlier in Edinburgh. Fogg has missed the train and arrives in London five minutes late, certain he has lost the wager. Similar to The Journey to the Centre of the Earth which I read yesterday - Verne creates amazingly awesome and complex characters. The main protagonist Mr. Fogg is an obsessive-compulsive routine loving timekeeper who bets his chums at the club that he can travel around the world in 80 days, which a newspaper said was possible - if no delays were incurred. He is so deep, that so much is beneath the surface of this quiet, content gentleman. Never fearing or worrying whatever dilemmas are thrown in his path and always willing to fail the mission to help his friends. He is also very good at handling a boat. I have to ask - does anyone know if he has been in any of Verne's previous stories as it seems like he has an amazing past. If he hasn't been present and that is just what is built up by the writing in this book I am speechless. Sir Michael Palin partially attempted to recreate the journey for a documentary series: Around the World in 80 Days with Michael Palin.
