About this deal

Adversi, Aldo (1963). Blaue Kartoffel... Lustiger Name dachte ich mir. :) The Songbird Ocarina of Time Replica Kokiri Edition is as durable and easy to play as you might want. In this ocarina, Songbird weds their production of great instruments with the game that popularized the ocarina for the masses. This product is a replica of the ocarina shown in the game.

This by itself is very limiting, as you cannot make use of lower or higher notes for effect. Ocarinas are made to sound in different pitch ranges to work around their limited range. Fingerings remain the same, but the sounded pitch is raised or lowered by one or more octaves. So to be short, the 12 holes ocarinas play more than one octave, and we often distinguish notes by saying "low" or "high", so you have "low A", "high A", etc. The ocarina is fully chromatic, and thus can play in any key that fits within the available range of notes. In general music terminology the term 'base pitch' is more appropriate, but people often use the word 'key' to mean both things. The 11 hole ocarina is a compromise between the 10 hole, and 12 hole designs. They have one subhole which can be placed on either the left or right hand. The following image shows it on the right.Let's walk through all of the ways that the hand can move and observe how they impact your hand's relationship with the ocarina. The rotation of the forearm The fingering system frequently requires one hole to be closed, while opening another at the same time. It is thus really easy to produce unintended 'chirps', if the holes are not opened / closed at exactly the same time. Now, if you want to learn to play, I think the easiest is first to practice C major scale (Do, Re, Mi... or C, D, E...) starting from the low C.

A split hole is when a single hole has been split into two smaller holes to make a sharp or flat easier to play.Due to the physics of the instrument, having a smaller range allows 10 hole ocarinas to have a strong, clean sound through the whole range, and can be made to have a range of different playing characteristics, for instance: In addition to providing more range, multichamber transverse ocarinas also have a few other benefits: It is worth mentioning that a middle ground exists. The 11 hole ocarina is a compromise between the 10 hole, and 12 hole designs. They have one subhole which can be placed on either the left or right hand. The most common version of these today are reproduction tourist souvenirs, going under the name 'Peruvian ocarina', and frequently just 'ocarina'. These can be easily recognised by their flat shape, with intricate painted designs and 8 to 10 identically sized holes. By experimenting with the things noted here it should be possible to find a posture that is comfortable for you. If you cannot find a comfortable position, do try ocarinas made by other makers as hole positioning varies a lot.

The two subholes of a 12 hole ocarina also change the playing characteristics of the entire instrument, giving it a steeper preassure curve, increasing the preassure differance between the high and low notes, and almost doubles the size of the finger holes. Changes which make the instrument harder to play. Why multichamber ocarinas are better at producing a large range But please note that your user won't be able to play just any random notes. For instance, on your alto C ocarina, you will only be able to play from A4 to F6. On some ocarinas the right pinky hole is split in two. This is done both to improve the tuning of the low sharp and to make the note easier to play, especially with a 10 hole ocarina. Notice that the angle of my finger aligns roughly with the angle of the holes. As a maker, I have found the inline design acoustically problematic. In summary, placing the voicing at the end of the chamber tends to make these ocarinas more prone to screeching when blown at higher pressures, which limits them to lower pressure tuning. Being aware of the different types of ocarinas will help you identify the most playable instruments. Sculptural whistlesI consider them great teaching tools as they force you to hear the pitch you want to produce, and adjust your hands as needed. They are also great for exploring the sound of arbitrary pitches over a drone, allowing you to rediscover unisons, thirds, and fifths.
