About this deal

Originally, the SBS had its own independent end-to-end selection programme to qualify as a Swimmer Canoeist, but its selection course was integrated into the joint UKSF selection course with candidates for the SAS. In the past, the SBS was staffed almost entirely by the Royal Marines. Today, all members of His Majesty's Armed Forces can be considered for special forces selection. [nb 2] Approximately 40% of all UK Special Forces are recruited from the Royal Marines. They always operate on thin margins, and never that awesome and expensive array of cool stuff that the Americans have. They also never fail to mention that. But then, it makes sense. War is expensive.

Zero Six Bravo proves that too much secrecy over Special

Being a reader of military history and fiction, this book is over the top. Quite possibly one of the best I have read this year. It is the story of British SAS behind enemy lines during the Iraqi War. The trials that these 60 soldiers went thru is beyond belief. It is a MUST READ for military lovers. First, let me start by writing that this is a real story and the events described in it are non-fiction, which makes it even more amazing. In 1952, SBS teams were held at combat readiness in Egypt in case Gamal Abdel Nasser's revolution turned more violent than it did. The SBS were also alerted during the Suez Crisis of 1956 and coup against King Idris I of Libya (1959), but in both cases they did not see action. In 1961, SBS teams carried out reconnaissance missions during the Indonesian Confrontation (see Operation Claret). [29] In the same year, Iraq threatened to invade Kuwait for the first time, and the SBS put a detachment at Bahrain. In 1972, the SBS came into prominence when members of a combined SBS and RAOC [30] team parachuted into the Atlantic Ocean after a bomb threat on board the cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2. A thorough search of the ship found no evidence of any device drawing the conclusion that it was a hoax. [31] The SBS conducted operations in Northern Ireland during The Troubles including with submarines. [32] In January 1975, two SBS kayak teams were inserted from HMS Cachalot to conduct an anti gun running operation in the area between Torr Head and Garron. [32] Special Boat Squadron [ edit ] The book is told through the eyes of an SBS veteran with the moniker, 'Grey', who commands a Pinkie driven by 'Moth' and its HMG manned a U.S. SOF embed known as 'the dude'. In April 1943, 1st SAS was divided, with 250 men from the SAS joining the Small Scale Raiding Force to form the Special Boat Squadron under the command of Major the Earl Jellicoe. [20] They moved to Haifa and trained with the Greek Sacred Regiment for operations in the Aegean. [21] and Operation Barras, the UKSF hostage rescue operation in Sierra Leone ( Operation Certain Death ). Both are highly recommended.Special Boat Service (SBS) | Britannica". www.britannica.com. The principal roles of the SBS are Surveillance and Reconnaissance (SR), including information reporting and target acquisition; Offensive Action (OA), including the direction of air strikes, artillery and naval gunfire, designation for precision guided munitions, use of integral weapons and demolitions; and Support and Influence (SI), including overseas training tasks. [8] The SBS also provide immediate response Military Counter Terrorism (CT) and Maritime Counter Terrorism (MCT) teams. [8] Caught in a ferocious ambush by thousands of die-hard fanatics from Saddam Hussein’s Fedayeen, plus the awesome firepower of the 5th Corps’ heavy armour, and with eight of their vehicles bogged in Iraqi swamps, M Squadron launched a desperate bid to escape, inflicting massive damage on their enemies. Running low on fuel and ammunition, outnumbered, outmanoeuvred and outgunned, the elite operators destroyed sensitive kit and prepared for death or capture as the Iraqis closed their deadly trap. Great read really enjoyable, well written , very brave men of special forces Great read really enjoyable, well written , very brave men of special forces Even though this is factual account, let me explain the book like this: you can read the great naval fiction where a British ship is under fire by two French frigates (the mundane books), or you have the authors that write about having a British frigate where 1/3 of the crew are mutinous, 1/2 the crew have yellow fever and the ship is being chased by two French frigates, oh and yes- the mizzen mast just got shot off. This book describes the latter one, except it is in real life.

Thompson, Leroy (1994). SAS: Great Britain's Elite Special Air Service. Zenith Imprint. ISBN 0-87938-940-0. Zero Six Bravo is a fantastic record of special forces soldiering but, more than that, it sets the record straight about this controversial operation. A must read.
