In October 1944, the book won the prestigious Graça Aranha Prize ( Prêmio Graça Aranha) for the best debut novel of 1943. The prize was a confirmation of what the Folha Carioca had discovered earlier that year when it asked its readers to elect the best novel of 1943. Near to the Wild Heart won with 457 votes: a spectacular number, considering that only nine hundred copies had actually been put on sale. Danny: They’re sending us stuff to listen to. They live closer to each other, so it makes sense for me to go down on half the days. Joana believes that it is impossible to ever put into words the feelings she experiences - since doing so will transform them into something other: the most curious thing is that the moment I try to speak not only do I fail to express what I feel but what I feel slowly becomes what I say. Or at least what makes me act is not, most certainly, what I feel but what I say.

Fans of the Cranberry Inn series (which introduce Viper as a character) will be thrilled to know that there is lots of Brody and Kacie in the book, and I loved seeing not only where they are now as a family, but also watching them interact with Viper and his girl as they help them through their hard time. And of course Viper’s grandmother is still a big part of his life, and I thought every moment with her was just gold! Each night, she approaches sleeping as if it was an adventure, falling from the easy clarity in which she lived into the same mystery, dark and cool, crossing darkness. Dying and being reborn. Prose is elliptical and hypnotic, reminds Virginia Woolf in Waves . The plot almost doesn't exist, and if - it's secondary, because what really matters here is Joana's inner life. Only images, flashes and snatches, and self-exploration to finally make her decision, to be triumphantly reborn. This one is also quite a difficult read - the translation reflects the unusual linguistic style of the original, it is poetic and largely about emotions rather than actions (there is a plot of sorts, as it follows episodes in the life of Juana from early childhood through to the decision to leave her unfaithful husband Otávio). In the early part of the book the childhood parts are alternated with her adult life. Once in a while she would express these things in ways I could connect with. Mostly she sounded mentally ill. Perhaps we are all mentally ill during puberty.

In my review of The Complete Stories, I neglected to say what a sensory experience Lispector's writing is, which is also true of this, her first novel. Certain passages I’ve highlighted help explain for me how integral the mixture of senses is to her vision and her unique voice.

Then the cover, intriguing and unsettling, as from some futuristic dreamscape, where some woman is lying as if she was sleeping or waiting. But for what ? Or whom ? Is she waiting for somebody to wake her up to the life ? Or maybe she prefers dreaming than living ? I got that Joana was often unhappy and happy at the same time; that she was disassociated from other people, that she was having trouble integrating her self with her body, that she had a horror of being trapped and an obsession with freedom. All of that is real to me. All of me swims, floats, crosses what exists with my nerves, I am nothing but a desire, anger, vagueness, as impalpable as energy.” Me: It was awesome and rather emotional to see Ginger join The Main Grains onstage for three Wildhearts songs at last year’s Halloween Hootenanny. How was it for you? Born in London, brought up in West Yorkshire, and living some 20 years in Spain before finally settling in Bath, a city totally unknown to her before her arrival there, these very different places forged her writing career as well as her character. She has worked as a cow girl, a secretary, a teacher of English as a foreign language among other things, as well as writing books and being a wife and mother. In Spain she was always rescuing street dogs; in Bath she somehow managed to acquire as many as 5 horses (looked after by her daughters). One of her best-loved books, and which received many fan letters from young readers, was "Just a Dog", a partially true story of how Shadow became a much loved member of the family and who eventually was brought to Bath because of her astonishing faithfulness and intuition. And that's what Viper does after an unpleasant and unfortunate event threats to forever change life as he knows it.

marriage is a goal, after I get married nothing more can happen to me. Just imagine: to have someone always at your side, never to know loneliness. - My God! - never to be by yourself, never, never. And to be a married woman, in other words, someone with her destiny traced out. This is such a gorgeous story. Cement Heart showed us Viper getting his girl, this is the story of him keeping her. It was definitely heartbreaking at times, but the emotion was beautifully written and I felt every moment. And it was worth every bit of pain for the swoony happy ending, and double epilogue that finished off Viper’s story perfectly. She wanted even more: to be reborn always, to sever everything that she had learned, that she had seen, and inaugurate herself in new terrain where every tiny act had a meaning, where the air was breathed as if for the first time.” I have a body and everything that I do is a continuation of my beginning; if the Mayan civilization doesn’t interest me it is because I have nothing in me that can connect with its bas-reliefs; I accept everything that comes from me because I am unaware of the causes and I may be trampling something vital without knowing it; this is my greatest humility… For Lispector, the real essence of life is 'becoming', through which all times are united. The desire to 'become' itself is a veiled expression of the desire to cease. Every process is just a revelation instead of creation. The only thing she hadn't got used to was sleeping. Sleeping was an adventure every night, falling from the easy clarity in which she lived into the same mystery, dark and cool, crossing darkness. Dying and being reborn.

Helen was invited to write an autobiographical sketch which appeared in the series "Something About the Author, Vol 5", published by Gale Research Co., Michigan, where a more detailed biography can be found. She now has the company of 2 little dogs, as well as regular visits from grandchildren who have persuaded her to republish some of her most popular titles as e-books. It amazed me how a person born in 1838 took it to his life's sole purpose of not only traveling around the world but connecting with nature, falling in deep love with it and making hell bent effort in actualising the initiatives against environmental protection. This is a great child's book about animals that is actually based on a realistic animal portrayal. By this I mean there are no talking animals and the horse that we're following, La Bruja, isn't anthropomorphised in any way; her feelings are based off her limited memories and instinct. I absolutely FLOVED this book and I’m so proud of Beth for staying so true to Viper’s character. She didn’t take the uncomplicated route, which I’m sure would have been much easier for her. Hell, I’m sure it would have even been more favorable amongst fans. Instead, she allowed Viper to tell us his story—his complete story. Complications and all. Unbeknownst to Viper, he is so much more than the stereotypes he tries so hard to see past.

Me: I lost three stone last year after gaining weight when depressed for a long period. You know when you had your 40th at The Barfly with The Yo-Yo’s, I bought a t-shirt in medium as I was at my lowest weight in a long long while… but soon after the gig I went through a depressive period and gained three stone, so couldn’t wear it. That t-shirt has just been taken out of the drawer and my goal is to fit into it. Being able to wear it without looking pregnant will be a big achievement and make me realise how far I’ve come. I thought you might like that?
