About this deal

I wouldn't have minded seeing a little more support in certain avenues, specifically when one character is very obviously struggling with severe depression and confides in another character, only to have her experiences totally erased with "you look fine!" and "you don't need medications!" The treatment of that character in general felt clunky to me, but I enjoyed the rest of the book overall. The art was cute and I enjoyed it for the chill, slice-of-life read that it was. I wash my hair with Carol’s Daughter’s Goddess line. I use Aussie’s Three Minute Deep Conditioner and it works like a charm. I use another deep conditioner from SheaMoisture, the Manuka Masque. After that, I let my hair air dry because I don’t like to put anything on it. I use a t-shirt [instead of a] towel. Then, I [follow] the leave-in conditioner, oil, and cream (LOC) process. I also put a little conditioner in a water bottle and spray it on. I braid Yaki hair first, then wrap it around [the base of my natural hair for] my bun. What’s your favorite hair company?

NORD – Martin Simpson’s Norse Epic is a Stunningly Illustrated Tale of Mortality and Lineage October 31, 2023 I liked getting to see every character's personality and style through the slice-of-life style, but would've definitely loved to know more about them as I felt that some things just got put aside to focus on various things. A young adult graphic novel about high school wallflower Belle Hawkins, who ends up in a love triangle after tutoring the girlfriend of her crush. While I love all the stories, "Bright Side" and "La Bendicion" particularly touches my heart and soul. The art was excellent. So colorful and lifelike; the tones well-matched each friend and their moods. And there was a wealth of diversity within their lives and stories. I hope to see more from this team!I would like to thank Chronicle books and Netgalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review. So many funny and true to life moments. I screamed when Davene pulled that Jamaican flag out of her bra! I love this book so much! The illustrations in this graphic novel are stunning!! The details for everyone’s hair are amazing. I loved how everyone had their own hairstyle! I really like wearing headband wigs from Her Given Hair. All I gotta do is slap it on. People were very complimentary. People thought this was my hair, hair. It does not give 'wig' at all. It's so cute and a really great color for my skin tone. What’s your opinion on the anti-sulfate debate?

that's exactly the kind of love the women in this book have for each other. they are filled individually with so much light and passion. the bond that they have is absolutely unbreakable. The book is decidedly a slice of life story, which is a part of what makes it so wonderful. Every single action, interaction between characters, and event, feels real and genuine. Each of the primary characters is featured in their own segment of the book participating in the ritual of self-love that is washing their hair, and the book is closed by a segment that highlights the love they have for each other, and ties the story up in a warm and comforting bow, hazy with kindness, love, and friendship. Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith follow Toni Morrison’s belief that, “if there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” The award-winning writer-artist duo embody this by creating the stories they want to see and read within comic books.In addition to co-creating Wash Day and Wash Day Diaries, Rowser and Smith worked together on the first chapter of MariSole, a webcomic series for Nike’s SNKRS app that chronicles the life of 16-year-old sneakerhead Marisol “Mari” Garcia, an Afro Dominican teen from Washington Heights. Rowser has also written and published many of her own comics, including Ode to Keisha, an award-winning autobiographical story that explores friendship, racism and identity, and Wobbledy 3000, a sci-fi tale about twerking. Throughout the process of creating these comics, the writer-artist duo has formed their own sisterhood, which they hope to channel into future projects. Davene’s story is also very emotional for me. For people who have not experienced depression, it may not be what you assume it looks like. It doesn’t mean your friend or the person who’s depressed is sad 24/7. We have ups and downs. I have depression and anxiety. You get used to putting on a face because you don’t want people to know or you don’t want to talk about it. And I wanted to show that part of how depression is, but also the other side of somebody who wants to help their friend and realizing maybe you aren’t helping in the way that they really need… I wanted to show Davene using medication and Cookie being against it because that’s reality for a lot of people. That’s a wide variety of influences and quite the shift from Jamaica to Vermont. Wash Day Diaries certainly focuses on hair and friendship but also issues like generational trauma. Why was it so vital to discuss that in Cookie’s story? A 31-year-old new mother and online marketplace brand manager based in New York, McClure’s hair is a self-described “kinky-curly mix of the 4s.” The crown is 4A, the middle is 4C, and the nape is 4B. What’s your wash day routine? Have you ever open a book and knew that you would immediately relate to it. Well this is how I felt as soon as I seen the first illustration of washday diaries 🔥

This is the story we all needed and experiences in our every day life. This was simply a delight to experience! Each character face their own private struggles - Kim's creepy ex, Cookie's estranged relative, Davene's depression brought on by a stressful career, Nisha's (okay, kind of funny) dating issues. And while each woman was by no means perfect - for instance, Cookie discourages Davene from seeking professional medical help - it only served to solidifies them as characters. Their friend group and group chat had me giggling through every chapter, because who among us hasn't sent emergency texts following a disastrous hook-up situation? I can't even formulate words. I read this in one sitting, and from the art to the words to the issues pertaining at hand, I could relate in small bursts. The overlapping beauty of culture, the humor, the seriousness of depressive cycles, the importance of friendship and protecting your own from toxic men; (chefs kiss). This graphic novel was a delight. The different short stories of all the ladies in this squad getting their hair washed or doing someone else’s hair for them all tied together for the last short story. These ladies obviously love each other a lot. I am not a POC and while I think anyone could relate to and enjoy this story, I feel it's incredibly important to young women of color to experience and relate, more than I might.This was such a lovely read! The four main characters were unique, complex, and super relatable. I was kind of reminded of Sex and the City, four gorgeous and funny women living their best lives, without any of the toxicity. And instead of the City being a character, we move from story to story through a narrative centered on haircare. another part that I loved about this comic were the colors too! Each girl had their own color and that represented them throughout the stories and they all went together so well. The colors also weren’t just what they wore it also had like an aura to them of that color because the room would be tinted in the color scheme or something. It was really cool! Wash Day Diaries is an interconnected short story series of four friends--Kim, Tanisha, Davene, and Cookie--as they go about their lives in the Bronx. Each story uses the character's relationship with hair and the care that it represents to give an intimate peek into their lives. But it's also an overall story about the power and beauty of female friendships that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy.
