When the Uniden R7 made its debut five years ago, it instantly become the top-rated and was one of the most coveted radar detectors available. You can set the volume level and whether or not you want it to beep depending upon the setting you are in. This setting can easily be customized for every car. For instance, if you are in a noisy vehicle, say a F-150, you can set the detector at a louder volume. On the contrary, if you are in something quieter, you can lower the volume. Like the R7, the Uniden R8 has a City and Highway mode. In City mode, X and K band sensitivity is reduced to prevent false alerts, while Ka bands stay at full sensitivity. In Highway mode, all bands go to full sensitivity to give you the most reaction time on the open road. You can further optimize the R8’s sensitivity levels through the Advanced mode. Similar to the R7, you can adjust the Rear Balance of the R8 in the settings menu. OLED Display & All Threat What Escort has done here is combine their best radar detector platform of the much revered Redline with the sophisticated bells and whistles of the Max 360c. Quite some time, however, has elapsed since then and VR’s patent on their multi-antenna has long since expired and other radar detector manufacturer have incorporated Valentine’s designs into their own platforms. Then with 35.5, the R8 once again trailed a bit behind some detectors like the RL360c, V1 Gen2, and R4, but it outperformed the R7 and naturally the DP360. It was the R7 that surprised me by falling behind more than the very top tier detectors.
Final thoughts? I really like the R8 overall. It’s going to continue being daily driver and I’m very happy with its performance. Is it perfect? No. No detector is, but the performance it offers is very confidence inspiring and I’m liking the false alert filtering too.
The fact the somewhat more capable Uniden R8 has since made its appearance, in no way takes away from the greatness of the Uniden R7 even to this day. After you watch this video, you’ll be up to speed with the R8 itself and now we can move onto real world experiences running it.In any event, the Uniden R8 builds upon the already extreme performance of the Uniden R7 and provides its driver with as much sensitivity one could ever desire. The New Zealand Government is currently rolling out new red-light and speed cameras throughout the country.
