About this deal

The best kind of design feels like it should have already existed but aesthetically there should be no charge colour options. If you’re new to the world of tubeless tyres, we have an explainer on tubeless tyres that tells you everything you need to know, as well as a guide on how to repair a punctured tubeless tyre.

Review: KOM Cycling sealant injector makes tubeless easy Review: KOM Cycling sealant injector makes tubeless easy

A simple gadget that lets you squirt fresh sealant into your tyre when it’s dried out to keep punctures at bay. Because you don’t need to unseat the tyre, there’s less mess and no red faces at the pump. And it lets you buy sealant in bulk, which is cheaper and kinder to the planet. It plugged holes made by a 6mm-diameter screwdriver with minimal fuss, only losing 5psi from the starting pressure of 30psi, and holding 30psi after sealing. To test the sealants’ operating temperatures, we put each of them in a freezer set to -18°C and an oven set at 50°C. Not exactly a real-world simulation, but it gave us an idea how the sealants would behave in warmer or colder climates. That doesn't mean that the Reserve Fillmore valves aren't worth getting though. What you can expect with the upgraded valves is the end of clogs that mean the first few pumps when topping off a tyre has to break through the sealant. You can also expect to eliminate clogged valves that leak air and require swapping valve cores. Small details to be sure, but you need valves anyway and this is an opportunity to fix a few things. Ditching your inner tubes and converting to tubeless is one of the most transformative upgrades in mountain biking. And since modern rims and tyres are usually ‘tubeless ready’, most new bikes already have all the pieces of the puzzle in the box. In fact, the only things you’ll have to buy are a couple of tubeless valves and a bottle of sealant. And that’s where this guide comes in, as we run down the best tubeless sealants on sale.

tubeless Reserve Fillmore tyre valve review: Does your tubeless

This is where I look foolish for a good cause. It turns out that, as with most tubeless issues, the problem isn't the design. I just needed new tools. It's possible to use Fillmore valves just like other valves but you need a specific sealant injector that's different from most. Injectors don’t just inject. They extract sealant, too. And getting old sealant out of a wheel can make even a bigger mess than putting it in. With Park’s injector, you can pull it out of the valve the same way you put sealant in. That way when you remove the tire, it might still be a little wet inside but you won’t get soaked. (You can also remove sealant with the injector from a tire that’s partially removed.)The tyre, temperature and the type or position of the puncture all affect the sealant’s ability to seal. Apply the correct amount, spin the tire, and wait a little bit. There’s not too much involved when it comes to using a tire sealant. The only real difference is the blue colour, and the fact an empty 60ml dispenser bottle and a valve-core remover are included, making installation easier. Why inject sealant all the way into the tire? Some injectors push sealant through the valve core (without removing it). This requires a very low-viscosity sealant that may not plug holes as effectively, and also tends to leave a lot of sealant residue inside the valve and core (which will sputter out at you during inflation). Others require removal of the core, but still leave a lot of residue inside the valve stem. Injecting directly to the tire eliminates these issues.

The e*thireen Tire Plasma must be shaken vigorously then poured immediately for the small particles to get into the tyre. Like most tubeless valves, the Milkit stems feature removable cores, the difference is there’s a small rubber cover over the bottom, which not only prevents sealant from clogging the valve, it also allows you to remove the valve core and measure the sealant level without air escaping from the tyres.

Designed for high-level cyclists who can’t be slowed down by a leak or puncture, the Effetto Mariposa Caffelatex is one of the faster-repairing options on the market today. When we first squirted the full 140ml there didn’t seem like much left in the bottom of the tyre, but we needn’t have worried because this luminous pink gunk sealed the 2.75mm puncture in barely a revolution. It also sealed the larger 5mm almost instantly and, while most sealants on test only sealed the sidewall cut temporarily, NPH sealed it permanently and we even managed to re-inflate the tyre after about an hour. We’ve carried out a series of controlled tests to try to find out which tubeless tyre sealant is the best at sealing holes in your tyre.
