About this deal

At any point during a level, a player can suggest that a throwing star be played - this is signaled by raising a hand. If all the players agree, the throwing star is deployed and each player discards the lowest card in their hand by placing it face up to one side. I watched Eric Martin’s preview, and then I read the rules. I have to be honest: I didn’t think the central mechanic would work that well. But it does, and the first time we played it, I found it novel and fascinating. The Mind is one of those highly addictive games that you’ll want to play again and again. This unique, special little game plays in 20 minutes or less and acts as both a main course for board game nights and as a palette cleanser, perhaps after some heavier games have hit the table. It takes less than 5 minutes to teach and, in my experience, you rarely only play one game once it gets going.

It’s fun to try this with different groups. Some groups play fast, some play slow. Some groups have a bit of awkward laughter as they’re getting ready to make a big play, some groups sit stone faced. Every group I’ve played with strategies how to use the throwing stars differently. Some groups may not like this — I’m not saying it is for everybody — but it is unique and worth trying, and regardless, you’ll learn a lot about your teammates with The Mind . Hi Bradley, thanks for coming by! Interesting perspective, what makes you not want to play it? Is it just that you’d prefer another style of game over this one, when you’re considering what’s going to ultimately hit the table? If no one holds a card lower than what you played, great, the game continues! If someone did, all players discard face up all cards lower than what you played, and the team loses one life. Use your precious lives carefully on your journey to beat the game. The team begins the game with a number of lives equal to the number of players. Lose your lives, and lose the game. You start with one shuriken too, and if everyone wants to use a shuriken, each player discards their lowest card face up, giving everyone information and getting you closer to finishing the level. As you finish levels, you get a reward of a shuriken or an extra life. Finish all the levels, and you win! The cards included may be confusing at first as the Mind rules are certainly unique, but gameplay will start to make sense as you learn how to play it. Starting the Game

Example: Tim, Sarah and Linus place one hand on the table - they are ready. They remove their hands from the table and the game begins. Linus places his card face up in the center of the table, it shows the number 17. At the start of the game, players receive lives equal to the number of players and a single shuriken. At any time during the game, a player can raise their hand to suggest a shuriken is played. If all players agree to play a shuriken every player discards their lowest card and play resumes. Gameplay Join us for the celebration of our 300th episode and also say farewell to Steve and Ken. The Nerd Cantina Show has been a fantastic experience and we thank anyone who has listened, supported, or joined in on the conversations. The game scales well between two to four players. You may start the game believing you don't stand a chance - but then you find some sort of cerebral rhythmic connection with your fellow players, and progress further than your collective wildest dream! But be warned, later rounds can get horrendously difficult.

The team is given a certain number of lives and throwing stars that are laid out openly on the table. The remaining lives and throwing stars are set aside at the edge of the table.
