TCL 50C720K 50 Inch QLED 4K Ultra HD Smart TV offers and online promotions, straight from the current Costco leaflet It's a clear upgrade on previous TCL TVs, with a QLED 4K screen — very strong for the budget range. The picture is boosted by Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and other HD formats, which optimises colour and contrast. You do have to bear in the mind, however, that it is ultimately a budget set. It's good but it doesn't compete with more expensive options.But at a fraction of the price, the difference is marginal in the grand scheme of things. Whites are crisply and purely defined, and with 4K SDR content – such as Netflix’s Sense8 – concerns about how punchy and vibrant the TV can be dissipate. Turn to a stream of The Crown on Netflix in Dolby Vision HDR, though, and those issues rear their head again. Complexions of the royal family take on a pallid tone, with the image less expressive. Similarly, upscaling isn’t wonderful, which isn’t surprising considering that the 5-Series uses TCL’s AIPQ processor that we largely found unsuccessful at upconversion on the TCL 6-Series. Making matters worse, its lower native refresh rate of 60Hz means motion processing isn’t nearly as good as the TCL 6-Series that’s just one step above it. Lastly, the 5-Series does have Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos passthrough. The former allows the TV to access the highest quality content over streaming services, while the latter can pipe spatial audio to your soundbar without a dedicated streaming player.The TV would overheat with HDR content, too. There was a period of time where the LED light would flash red, and a notification pop up signalling the TV was overheating. It happened across a range of apps, and while it did occur during the year’s hottest days, the window was open and the area well ventilated. I’m not sure heat is a great excuse considering nothing else was affected. HDR PRO combined with quantum dot provides a superior High Dynamic Range (HDR) experience delivering accurate colours and finest details. Assembly is super simple and involves tightening two screws for each foot and inserting the power cable. Much like the Hisense Roku, you’ll reach the set-up screen within minutes of taking the TV out the box. There’s also wall-mounting support if that’s of interest, with the VESA wall-mount available separately. The X90J supports Dolby Vision, but the real visual power is Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR — this analyses the images and figures out which areas to focus in on. It’s an intuitive tech that processes images like the human brain and eye. The result is better detail and depth, and more realistic nuances. Where straight-up visuals are concerned, the JX940 is powered by HCX Pro AI Processor (the same processor that powers Panasonic’s more expensive OLED sets). This smart bit of tech analyses colour, contrast, and clarity in each image to deliver the best possible quality in every single frame. It’s especially good for lightning-fast action. That goes for games, movies, and sport. Not to mention multi-HD support — Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10, or the new HDR10+. It supports Dolby Atmos too, so the sound quality matches the action. The next generation is here. By which we mean next-gen consoles: the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. They're pretty much standard for serious gamers going forward. Which means it's time to also upgrade to a 4K TV. Why miss out on the stunning detail and fast response gameplay that 4K TVs offer? If there’s a silver lining to the 5-Series’ performance, it’s that it only has 11ms of lag and has a game mode that will turn on automatically when you turn on a video game. Combined, these two features certainly help games feel more responsive – something we can attest to after playing several hours of intense UFC 3 matches on the 5-Series – but without HDMI 2.1 and/or 120Hz support, it’s really not a great fit for the Xbox Series X or PS5.
The TCL 5-Series (S535) is priced on the lower end of mid-range, but it certainly doesn’t look like it. With a minimal bezel and metallic frame, the 5-Series should look modern and sleek in any living room. That plainer feel extends to HDR content, too. The TCL Roku is wanting for colour expression. HDR content can look drab from time to time.

Watching The Favourite on Blu-ray, the TCL Roku takes a plainer approach to painting colours than the Hisense. This TCL TV supports them all! This is the refresh rate — how many times the screen refreshes per minute. The higher the refresh rate the smoother the handling of motion and gameplay is. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X pumping out games at 120fps, you want a 4K TV that can handle that with 120Hz. Thankfully, most do. You’ll also find some TVs equipped with VRR. This means Variable Refresh Rate, which keeps pace with sudden changes in a game’s fps output to prevent stuttering within gameplay. What is the best gaming TV? The TCL weighs less and looks a little less bulky from behind. The IR receiver/LED indicator below the TV logo blinks to confirm remote control presses or flashes red when the TV encounters an issue, to name but two potential occurrences. While TVs come with multiple HDMI ports, not all ports will be HDMI 2.1 (2.0 is often included as standard — anything under 2.0 won’t be able to handle 4K resolution at anything higher than 30 frames a second). Fortunately, most of the latest crop of 4K TVs will include at least one HDMI 2.1, which is all you need. This is unless you want to have both a PS5 and Xbox Series X plugged in at once.
