There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told. I knew, because I was one of them.’ For information on release, appearances, ARCs, giveaways, and exclusive content, sign up for the newsletter at https://adrienneyoungbooks.com/ Spells for Forgetting is a story with an unsolved mystery at its core, surrounded by hints of the practice of magic from one generations to the next, and a second chance at romance. The island setting and menacing residents give an eerie, dark tone to this Fall seasonal read. If you’ve read any of Adrienne Young’s YA novels, you’ll be familiar with her effortlessly atmospheric and lyrical writing. Spells for Forgetting feels even more affecting and immersive, blending magic and slow burn romance with the kind of evocative descriptions that brings Saoirse to life in all its beauty and ugliness. It really is the epitome of an autumn novel – one to be read curled up under a blanket as the trees rustle outside. And if the trees aren’t rustling, you’ll be able to hear them anyway thanks to Adrienne Young’s enchanting ability to transport readers into the wind and sea swept island of her story. Overall, Spells for Forgetting is interesting, dark, atmospheric, and mysterious thriller with touch of magical realism but it didn’t turn out as good as I expected. It sure needed spell for speed and magic.

Spells for Forgetting – Adrienne Young

There were times when I wondered if I'd dreamed it. If he'd ever been real or if he was a fragmented piece of my imagination, buried deep and painful within me like a splinter under the skin.”I'm never moving to a small Island off the coast of Washington. They're always portrayed as hauntingly beautiful with a history of tragedy and unreliable electricity.

Spells for Forgetting: the magical and compelling mystery

In a blink, a single moment, every summer in the orchard, every storm over the dark sea, every night in the fishing cabin was entombed inside me like a body beneath a shroud, sealed away from the sunlight. It was for that very reason that I hadn’t believed it when I read the handwritten letter folded into the will, just days after I watched my mother take her last breath. The plot is complex and encompasses a whodunnit mystery with numerous twists. But it’s not just a mystery/thriller, Spells also has some elements of fantasy — spells and potions, and a bit of romance. There is a big and long reveal, but it is slowly exposed layer by layer through each of the players in the novel. A reveal that is sure to surprise. The island wasn’t home, even if it once had been. And she was right. No one came to Saoirse to stay. A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true loveAfter so many years of staying away, of never speaking of the place, she’d parted this world with only one wish—that her ashes be buried on Saoirse Island. Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young is a Genre Blend of Mystery-Thriller, Magical Realism, and Romance! Class. I hadn’t thought about my classroom on campus for weeks, and the view of the orange-hued wooden risers in the light streaming through the tall arched windows made me feel even farther away. “Not until next semester. I took a leave to take care of my mom.” The next thing I loved was the excellent world building. Author, Young has got real talent for creating an almost realistic environment with some magical elements. You can just taste the salt in the air and smell the herbs from the apothecary.

Spells for Forgetting October 2022 BOTM Add-on Discussion - Spells for Forgetting

There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told. I knew, because I was one of them.” Adrienne Young, Spells for Forgetting I'd been eighteen years old. I'd known nothing about suffering or responsibility or loss, but somehow, I'd known this soul-deep king of love that I now wondered if most people never found. It cut open a vein in me that never stopped flowing.” Through palpable tension balanced with glimmers of hope, Hoover beautifully captures the heartbreak and joy of starting over. I am looking at the rating of over 4 stars next to this title and I am wondering if these people read the same book that I did. Maybe they just don't care that it was a bad book and rated it high because they like Young's other books? Sure thing.” The door opened again as I leaned into it, and I swallowed hard when I spotted the tipping masts of the boats in the harbor. “Better go. I’ll probably lose service any minute.”From the first sentence, the reader is transported to Saoirse, a mystical island located off the coast of Seattle, Oregon. It’s steeped in folklore, the locals secretive and protective of the island and the orchard that provides the island’s survival. They begrudgingly endure the seasonal tourists who visit, knowing they provide the much-needed income that allows the island to stay as it is. If you find yourself thinking about him (or her) long after you broke up, it’s probably time to move on. Or if you’ve become attached to someone in a way that is not healthy for you or them, it’s best for everyone involved that you can finally set them free. Start your new love life casting this spell to get over him, and forget your ex once and for all. What a wonderful and haunting story this was for me. Adrienne Young is a writer who certainly knows how to make simple words expressive and heartfelt without being too flowery and overdone. The atmospheric writing was beautiful and whimsical where the reader can envision the simple life and everyday functions on Saiorse. I found the characters very believable and felt all their emotions within each of their stories. I enjoyed that the book had several dark mysteries at it's core which will all be brought to light by the end of the book. Do not go into this book thinking there is a lot if magic and fantasy happening throughout the story or you might be a little disappointed. The mysticism is subtle and felt realistic which made the book so very entertaining. I'm so glad I was given the chance to read this novel as it was a wish book granted to me by the publisher. This pain inside me was like broken glass clutched in a fist. I knew it was drawing blood. Bleeding me out, all day, every day. But still, I couldn’t just open my fingers and let it go. Because this wasn’t that kind of love.”
