About this deal

A domestic cat knows their owner will feed it and it knows it can always run inside to the safety of the house if things get awkward. Scoot is totally safe for use in gardens, on plants and edible crops and is humane, bio-degradable and very effective. Each deterrent in this list is the best of its type. No two are exactly the same and they all work in slightly different ways from one another, targeting different senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch etc…) and different types of problems. Hopefully there’s something here that you feel you can make use of. The machine is a hardy little thing, made of strong plastic materials. It is also very weather resistant and can be left outside all year without worry. If you’ve ever wondered why a fox chooses to poo right in the centre of your lawn or on a paving slab or patio, marking territory is the likely reason. These prominent places provide the maximum opportunity for neighbouring foxes to smell the message and realise they need to stay away.

For example, if you use two scent-based deterrents, both products will put a fox on alert via its sense of smell. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s much better than doing nothing. However, this method was popularised by Abbotsbury Swan Sanctuary in Dorset who successfully stopped foxes disturbing their swans by installing a series of radios tuned to Radio 4. The Today Programme on Radio 4 actually did a feature on it. A garden sprinkler with a movement-detecting sensor that scares foxes by shooting out a jet of water.

I was finding not so little fox ‘deposits’ in my garden and so it was a great opportunity to give this stuff a whirl.

If you have foxes regularly coming into your garden and your cat displays some of the characteristics above, then you can be pretty sure that they’re feeling some degree of fox-related stress.

Many scented deterrents contain citronella, which most animals (including foxes and cats) are physically repelled by, hence reader Abigail’s concern that all fox repellents also seem to affect cats.Costing around 30 pounds, it is the more expensive of the two ultrasound fox repellants we are reviewing here today, and it does have some upgrades over the cheaper model such as a wider range for the sensor and a flashing light function. Feeling a little annoyed, but undeterred ourselves, we set about spraying all over again, but this time we made sure to keep applying the Scoot fox repellent every evening. This time it worked wonders, and after two weeks of my friend spraying, he stopped and hasn’t had any problems since. Again, these spikes are not designed to cause harm, but they are firm enough to create an uncomfortable sensation in a fox’s paws. How To Return A Product

This unit is so effective at reducing the pooing, digging and damage caused by foxes because it forces them to change their behaviour and associate your garden with the irritating noise, which ultimately keeps them away. The FOXWatch contains an infrared sensor that detects a fox’s movement and body heat to emit sharp bursts of ultrasonic noise until the fox leaves the protected garden or area. That was shortly after I moved to South London in 2007 and encountered urban foxes for the first time. I suppose my friend’s reaction was understandable. It’s not until you encounter foxes on a regular basis that you realise just how destructive their behaviour can be. In fact, the purpose of a good quality fox deterrent is to change the fox’s attitude to your garden from somewhere that it has free reign to do as it pleases to an environment full of uncertainty, doubt and potential danger. This will provide a sustained, concentrated scent which will send the message to the fox that it has lost control of the territory. Only spraying Scoot once or twice runs the risk of the fox thinking it has won the battle and the ‘intruder’ has given up and gone somewhere else.

While you’ve been thinking about what effect a fox repellent might or might not have on your cat, you may have actually overlooked the thing that is upsetting your cat the most… The smell, the sight and the sound of the fox is going to be far more stressful for your cat than any deterrent you use to get rid of it. To make it very clear that foxes are not welcome in your garden, it’s worth using at least two different fox deterrents. It’s important these two deterrents target different senses from one another. With these products, the results are usually not instantaneous, so be prepared to wait a week or even two before it changes the foxes behaviour, and if it’s still not working, try playing within the frequency range. In fact, it’s specifically designed to help protect plants, flowerbeds, potted plants and grass from being dug up, damaged or fouled on by foxes.
