About this deal

When sanding a bare wood door before painting or varnishing, medium or even fine sandpaper will usually suffice. These recommendations are just a guide as you’ll need to assess each door you sand individually. Is it better to sand by hand or with a sander? How can they possibly sand surfaces?”, many may ask. The delicate strands of steel wool give tender cuts on the surfaces that result in sanding. Other power sanders may have small clamps at the sides of the sander to hold the sandpaper in place. Inspect your power sander to find out which system the tool uses, then line up and load the sandpaper onto the base of the sander. STEP 3: Sand the surface.

Let me give you an important reminder. Do not forget to brush off the sand, dust, or metal parts that accumulate within the grooves after sanding, because they may lead to rusting, a lousy finishing and a faulty coat of paint if you are planning to paint over them. Sanding helps not only prior to finishing, but also during finishing. If you plan to clear-coat or stain your workpiece with an oil finish, follow these steps. Whether curved outward or inward, the spinning workpiece presents the spinning surface, and the sanding solution is pressed against the spinning wood. By adjusting the pressure you apply to the sanding solution, you can achieve a smooth surface to any curve. Sanding drums. The random orbital sander can take care of your convex surfaces, but what about a concave surface – on that curves inward? Sanding drums will save the day for you. They are perfect for sanding curves and profiles, as well as intricate and irregular-shaped objects. They are used in woodworking and metalworks – they can remove burs and rust in seconds. In the initial steps of this process, a rough- or medium-grit piece of sandpaper can remove the surface layer of material and begin to smooth the finish of the wood. Medium-grit sandpaper creates a smooth enough grit for paint or stain, but if you aren’t going to be covering the wood, or you are looking for a smoother finish, then it’s suggested to switch to a fine-grit piece of sandpaper. It is mostly a challenging task to sand the table or chair legs. Since the legs may be irregularly shaped or may have ornate carvings, you cannot expect to sand the grooves in the legs that easily.

Make sure you use appropriate PPE such as a facemask to prevent inhaling sawdust while sanding (Image credit: Getty) Sanding doors: Five steps to a smooth finish Manual operation of swing arm to take workpiece to sanding head, with adjustable constant pressure system to hold workpiece against sanding head. However, they come at a cost. Curves take more time to cut than straight lines, and smoothing them demands a certain finesse. In fact, if not faired properly, curves can make a piece look worse rather than better. The last thing you want are bumps, humps, and other irregularities marring the otherwise elegant sweep of a leg or table edge. And, of course, curves must be clean and smooth as well as fair, without scratches, scorches, or machine marks calling attention to themselves. Another commercially available sanding accessory is a sanding mop, which is essentially a bundle of narrow strips of sandpaper attached to a mandrel for mounting in your drill press (Photo 2). As you hold your workpiece against the mop, the abrasive strips conform to the profile, smoothing it without altering the piece’s shape.I’ve used them myself, and I was quite happy with the result. Take one of the rubber contour pads that match the groove area and keep on sanding! How much is your time worth? I know that I’ve devoted countless hours to hand sanding, and the Festool LS 130 nearly eliminates any need to. A couple of passes with this sander and the job is pretty well done. So, from a value standpoint, I give it a 10 out of 10 because I haven’t seen another sander like it, and because it expedites the whole detail-sanding process over hand sanding. Wipe down the woodworking project with a damp cloth to remove any remaining stripping solution, then use a power sander to remove the top layer of previously finished wood. You can start at 40-grit sandpaper for this job and work your way to a medium-grit or fine-grit sandpaper, depending on the intended finish. At this point, you can paint, stain, or otherwise seal the wood to finish the project. Your stationary belt sander can also serve for sanding some concave curves. Although there are very few instances when you should use a machine without its guards in place, this is one of those times. Removing the top belt guard presents the machine’s upper drum for use as a sort of spindle sander (Photo E).

If you are using loose sheets of sandpaper, they’ll likely be graded into three categories: coarse, medium and fine. Replacement sheets or discs for electric sanders will have a more specific particle or ‘p’ value as their sandpaper grade.

If you choose Goldflex Soft you can start sand with P150, continue applying the base coat and intermediate sand with P320. Apply a paint stripper to the project, ensuring that you read and follow the direction for use provided by the manufacturer. After application, let the paint stripper sit for the indicated period of time before wiping it away with a clean rag or cloth.

Sanding mops. Have you ever heard of sanding mops? They are made of various materials and in fact, can be a DIY project if you are curious and up to the task. One such material is J-weight flexible cloth, and generally, sanding mops are made of materials that are flexible and can adapt to the surface being sanded. The variable speed feature is nice as well. There are definitely times when less is more, especially when working with delicate profiles. Before we go too much further into woodworking we should talk about sanding. In the previous three lessons, any sanding you did on the class projects was probably more than adequate, but with some very basic techniques you can greatly improve the quality and time it takes to make your projects beautiful. After sanding it's good practice to clean up the mess that comes with sanding and take a moment to examine your work. To avoid having to constantly switch between different devices when sanding an item made of various materials, you can use a sanding roller. This is equipped with a flexible sanding wheel which is ideal for using on different materials. You can easily switch between the various attachments depending on the material you're working on without having to reach for an extra tool. It uses a true linear motion, so it properly imitates hand sanding. Obviously, when you get off of flat materials and wrap around round material or get in and sand a rabbet, random orbit sanding is no longer an option. We’ll get into more detail on that momentarily. The advantage of using steel wool instead of sandpaper is that they offer flexibility and compressibility to help you reach difficult spots to sand. You can compress them to sand moldings, edges, or grooves. For the flat surfaces, there are three options, use a shoulder plane, card scraper, or a chisel. Shoulder Plane
