The liners felt great, with a micro-fleece on the palm side giving a warm touch and also quite a lot of dexterity, and a puffier thermolite insulation behind the hand for added warmth. This is the updated Ridgemaster, introduced this season and made from Gore-Tex three-layer Performance Shell fabric, with a combination of polyester and polyamide material. The Sports Gravdal XO 2.0 provided protection against wind and rain and also provided warmth on winter days on the hill. It’s certainly no lightweight, but has all the features needed and quality was good. Styling was traditional and fit was standard, with quite a long design. It has a snowsport feel and doesn’t feel out of place in urban environments too on those cold, wet winter days. Rab’s parent company is ‘climate neutral’, offsetting its emissions via carbon credits, including a Zimbabwean forest, support for a hydropower plant in Vietnam, and providing efficient cooking stoves for women in Nepal. The Prosport offers good value for money, with all the features you need to keep you protected on Britain’s winter hills. It’s fairly traditional in design, so will appeal to those who prefer that look to a slimmed-down minimalist look.Sustainability is good. The durable water-resistant treatment is PFC-free and there’s 58 per cent recycled polyester in the fabric. The comfortemp filling is 100 per cent biodegradable, and Maier says its production method is efficient in using less water and adhesive. The Meteor is a modular mitt, a lightly insulated weather-proof shell with a detachable fleece inner. You're effectively getting two pairs of mitts for the price of one (a fair price too), and this gives you three different options for maximum versatility. Berghaus says it makes its products to last, to enable the best sustainability. It also offers a free repairs service for its clothing. It recycles clothing at the end of its life or donates garments to four organisations to continue their use. It uses 100 per cent renewable energy in its offices. It’s also a member of the European Outdoor Conservation Association.

One thing to note: the Moiazza was quite a snug fit, so you may need to consider trying a size larger than your normal choice. This cagoule from UK brand Craghoppers was selected for our Outdoor 100 for 2022/23. What does that mean? It means it gets the stamp of approval from all of our team here at Outdoors Magic. On further inspection it becomes clear that where the ME Pinnacles differ slightly from the BD offering is in the fit/sizing. The ME mitts are slightly smaller sized, with a very slightly smaller sized cuff. They are a little more technical in their fit, and hug the hand well. A fully waterproof, taped outer shell incorporating synthetic Primaloft Silver insulation to create a toasty warm waterproof shell. These mitts are fat, very fat. These mitts are warm, very warm. These mitts are not hugely dextrous due to the previous two facts, but you can't have it all!The Prosport’s main zip is protected by a storm flap which uses press-studs to secure it. I found these less convenient than hook-and-loops strips, and a bit more difficult to fasten when wearing gloves. There are soft tricot areas at the top of the zip and in the chin area for added comfort. The zip is two-way, with double pullers. One thing is for sure, there isn't a bad mitt in this bunch, but some were better than others, and some were more suited to specific tasks. Read on to find out which mitts won our best in test, and why.

The little extras were all there with Mountain Equipment obviously trying hard to make these the perfect mitts. They have small tabs for clipping them on to a 'biner, and carrying them on your harness (cuffs pointing down, no snow inside), and they have a really nice elastic wrist loop, and an effective one-handed cuff closure system. Our only tiny criticism of these mitts was that the elastic on this was a little long, so when we pulled them tight it was a bit distracting - answer was, we cut 3cm off the end of the elastic - job done. The palms of the mitts have a grippy reinforced material that seems fairly hard wearing (so far) but we don't think it has quite the beef of a real leather palm (get it!). I liked the clean and minimalist design of the Salewa Moiazza, which performed very well and is the best choice for hillgoers who want minimum weight and pared-down features, yet with good performance. They are clearly a high quality product and seem well put together. They have really easy to use drawcords, nice and chunky, and a large gauntlet that covers the wrist easily. We had them in size large, and they were roomy for the size, swallowing hands easily. You can tell these are a well-thought-out product, and the little extras like the red loops to clip them to a harness (upside down of course) and the slight curve to the palm to follow the natural shape of the hard, means they aren't just a big bag full of down. But its Gore-Tex Paclite construction offers complete protection against the elements, and good breathability and, despite its light weight, feels robust. The brand’s widespread distribution in the UK, Europe and the USA means the Downpour is available from multiple retailers, both online and in-store. As such, it is often discounted, making it an even better value buy. Full Specifications

At first glance these mitts look pretty chunky, but when you put them on you realise that most of the 'chunk' is behind the hand, meaning the Nebula mitts are surprisingly dextrous (for their size). The down insulated Ulvetanna mitts from Berghaus are by far the warmest in this test and are clearly aimed at extremely cold temperatures and high altitudes. They are overkill for Scottish winter, but could be a finger saver in the harshest of Alpine winter conditions. But they are best suited to the Greater Ranges. The main material has a 15,000mm hydrostatic head – that’s not high spec but not to be sniffed at either – and it’s made partially from recycled materials and with a plant-based EcoShield treatment. Full Specifications Weighing in at 260g, these aren't the lightest mitts in the test, more mid-weight. They are filled with synthetic insulation (Rab's own 'Cirrus') and they are shelled with a water resistant Pertex outer. Summary: Overkill for Scottish winter, but if you are Polar-bound, or off to Alaska or the Himalaya, and need something super warm, these fatties would be brilliant.
