Leon attends a circus show with his friends who are all hoping to lose themselves to the magic and mystery of the event. Leon though is sceptical until the magic begins and he is instantaneously bewitched. Like Alice in Wonderland, he is soon transported to another realm and place where the 'magic takes you' and never lets go. A nice book, with interesting illustrations and a lot of imagination. It will be a great book for my "Show Must Go On" school theme, and I'm sure the children will like it and be enchanted by the illustrations. Landing (If time allows): Invite real-life circus acts into school to perform to the children or chn to create their own talent show. This is athree-session spelling seed for the book Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister. Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014. Your children will either: identify the inverted commas, highlight the dialogue, insert the inverted commas with guidance or add in the inverted commas without guidance.

Although the illustrations are a bit creepy and questionable at times, it really draws the children in and makes the story unique. The vintage traditional circus feel is really nostalgic too and lends itself to a fun historical context of circus through the ages. The story is about a boy who goes to a magic show with his family and his brothers don’t believe. There are other performers in the circus tent which initially invite the reader to continue reading and exploring the illustrations. Leon is then invited by the magician to be part of the show and as Leon is magically disappeared he arrives in the place where all the magic goes.David Q: I like it because when we read it, it's like we're in the book and I think this book is amazing. I re-read and re-reviewed this book after years of attending grammar training with it being the sole book used across counties which put me off. Thank goodness I returned years later to enjoy it for what it is.
