We were very impressed with the level of detail in the full-color user manual. It was very informative and even listed the psi for each pressure level and the temperatures equivalents for the less, normal, and more sauté functions. Of all the brands we tested, Instant Pot had the clearest explanation of how its pre-set programs work.

It’s a dab hand at cooking rice, too, and has a number of preset functions to help you get it just right. There was no burning or crusting at the bottom during cooking and, in our white rice test, we had beautifully fluffy rice for three in 24 minutes. This is a little longer than it would typically take in a dedicated rice cooker, but that’s a small price to pay for decent rice in a multifunction cooker. What could be improved? If you’re after a simple, no-fuss multicooker, the Instant Pot Duo Nova is a good option for beginners. If you have a large family, the 10-quart capacity is perfect for cooking up a storm, although you still have the smaller options to suit your needs. It’s a good idea to only use the parts that came with your Instant Pot, or authorized replacement parts and accessories that are designated for your size and model of Instant Pot.In particular… During our tests, the Instant Pot Duo Nova performed well when pressure cooking meat dishes, stews and casseroles, but was a little disappointing when cooking rice and steaming vegetables.Multi-cookers do take up a good chunk of counter space but on the flip side, this Instant Pot will replace lots of other appliances and therefore take up much less space than if you had a separate slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, yogurt maker, and pressure cooker. Speaking of annoying sounds, the pot makes 10 loud beeps when it’s done. There’s an option to turn the sound off by pressing and holding the “-” button for three seconds, but we wanted at least some audio alert when our food was ready—just not one that was so incessant. The recipe booklet, on the other hand, was a little less impressive. The photos accompanying the recipes weren’t very attractive, and it was clear the recipes weren’t designed for that particular Instant Pot (some even had instructions for stovetop pressure cookers). The Instant Pot app also has more than 1,000 recipes to choose from, but none seemed particularly appealing.
