About this deal

Specifically, Diggory recounts bits from one of Odo's great works, The Great Unhappened: Being a Record of the Yet Undone, which describes -- in terms appropriate to the times -- inventions and technological advances from our times, an amusing -- particularly in how things are described -- glimpse of our present in the distant past. I was so annoyed and upset by the book that I called my friend Marc, who shares much of my musical tastes. After listening to me, he noted that when this book came out, he had heard Donovan on Vin Scelsa's radio show, and had come to much the same conclusions from hearing the interview, but was glad that I was confirming his impressions. Hurdy Gurdy is a touching coming-of-age tale, joyful and extremely funny. It cleverly dissects medieval beliefs, while suggesting that perhaps we aren’t as wise in the modern day as we think we are. Hurdy Gurdy by Christopher Wilson — prophecy and pestilence

Zanfona (Spain). Typically guitar-shaped body, with three melody strings, and two drone strings. Some older examples had a diatonic keyboard, and most modern models have a chromatic keyboard. Zanfonas are usually tuned to the key of C major, with the melody strings tuned in unison to G above the middle C on the piano. The drones are: the bordonciño in G (one octave below the melody strings) and the bordón in C (two octaves below middle C). Sometimes, two of the melody strings are in unison, and the remaining string is tuned an octave lower, in unison with the bordonciño (this string was sometimes known as the human voice, because it sounds as if someone is humming the melody an octave lower). In the eighteenth century, the term hurdy-gurdy was also applied to a small, portable barrel organ or street organ (a cranked box instrument with a number of organ pipes, a bellows and a barrel with pins that rotated and programmed the tunes) that was frequently played by poor buskers, street musicians specifically called organ grinders. Such organs require only the turning of the crank to play; the music is coded by pinned barrels, perforated paper rolls, and, more recently, by electronic modules. [14] The French call these organs Orgue de Barbarie ("Barbary organ"), while the Germans and Dutch say Drehorgel and draaiorgel ("turned organ"), instead of Drehleier ("turning lyre"). In Czech, the organ is called Flašinet. Joseph Bodin Boismortier (1691-1755) – Divertissements de Campagne, Loisir du Bercail and Gentillesses. / Le Rebours I did see Donovan in concert in Newcastle City Hall in the early 1980's. He sat on a chair and sang his songs with his acoustic guitar with Danny Thompson, who used to be in Pentangle, playing double bass behind him. Of course, it was all about nostalgia, for his time was between the years of 1965 and 1970. "This is the first song I ever wrote," he said, as he introduced Catch the Wind.

Banshee in Avalon (2014-11-27). "A Hurdy Gurdy and MIDI controller". audiofanzine . Retrieved 2018-12-08. The fourteenth-century youth has considerable book-learning -- including much of the most up-to-date medical knowledge -- but all this is very much of its time. Donovan was among a number of stars who spent time in India at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As Shirley MacLaine put it, "The people here introspect and search." Search for what? She said she did not know, but what was important was the search. p. 193. Because, as he can't help but observe, despite not having the pox himself: "it does always follow me, close behind, wherever I go ...". On French-style instruments, the sensitivity of the buzzing bridge can be altered by turning a peg called a tirant in the tailpiece of the instrument that is connected by a wire or thread to the trompette. The tirant adjusts the lateral pressure on the trompette and thereby sets the sensitivity of the buzzing bridge to changes in wheel velocity. When hard to trigger, the strike or the bridge is said "sec" (dry), "chien sec", or "coup sec". When easy to trigger, the strike or the bridge is said "gras" (fat), "chien gras", or "coup gras". As in all his work, Wilson's command of language again impresses: Diggory's account is consistently well-expressed, language used cleverly and carefully -- with Wilson careful not to let himself and the narrative get carried away by it, either. But you know what, Donovan? You ARE a total dork, and that’s why I love you. And somehow the essence of that fact—and the idea that only a man with a little moondust in his brain could compose such stirring music about mermaids, fairies, and staying groovy—still shines through. And that’s why I can’t give this book less than 3 stars: one for being—in his writing if not his facts—shamefully honest, one for adapting the book as a love story (awwww), and one for ending the story in 1970. On the Hungarian tekerő the same control is achieved by using a wedge called the recsegőék (control wedge, or literally "buzzer wedge") that pushes the drone string downward. In traditional tekerő playing, the buzzing bridge is controlled entirely by the wrist of the player and has a very different sound and rhythmic possibilities from those available on French instruments. In France, a player is called un sonneur de vielle (literally "a sounder of vielle"), un vielleux or un vielleur. Many thanks to u/elektrovolt and u/sanneke34 for making this possible. Your commitment to creating an affordable hurdy gurdy that a person can be proud to own and play is a game changer. I imagine this is a labor of love, and please know that at least the one you’ll be sending my way will be truly a loved instrument. I’ve been waiting for this for 30 years and appreciate that it finally could happen. Thank you! The reason we still care about Donovan is, of course, those deathless songs; he was a phenomenal melodicist with a clear, compelling voice. But even there, he focuses on the uninteresting parts, typing out the lyrics to even insipid ditties such as “There Is a Mountain” as though they were and remain deeply, soulfully meaningful to us. How did the lovely “Wear Your Love Like Heaven” happen? He doesn’t tell us. A lot of people set out to make a kit instrument with the thought that they'll save a lot of money and get a high quality hurdy-gurdy. It's a nice thought, but not very realistic. It's true that most kits are significantly cheaper than a completed instrument. A parallel might be a guitar kit: you can make a guitar from a Martin guitar kit, but it's very unlikely that you will end up with a guitar that's comparable in quality to a Martin, unless you've already made a whole bunch of guitars and already have the skills to make a really good guitar.
