Most respondents (77%, n=837) provided tape removal instructions to the clients. Common instructions included slowly removing tape (44%, n=474), applying oil (mineral, baby) to tape or use of adhesive remover (18%, n=191), wetting tape before removal (10%, n=113), and do not rip off tape (7%, n=67). Twenty-three percent (n=246) did not provide any tape removal instructions ( Table 5).
How tightly the tape is stretched affects how much tension is put on a targeted muscle, generally speaking. Often just called KT tape, elastic therapeutic tape is an elastic cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive on one side. It was invented in the 1970s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, whose Kinesio® Tex Tape is still popular today, though many other types have since cropped up. KinesioTape (KT), or kinesiology tape, is used by therapists to change muscle tone, move lymphatic fluids, correct movement patterns, and improve posture. Research suggests that KT tape provides some support to unstable ankles, and one study found that it helped protect martial artists’ Achilles tendons. Because of the bonus support it provides, some people also report feeling more comfortable being active with KT tape than without. That’s why, says Malek, it’s “best used in conjunction with another treatment like physical therapy and not alone if it is used in treating painful conditions like knee and shoulder pain.” 1.
