When the Titanic set sail on 10th April 1912, they had no way of knowing that the self-styled 'unsinkable ship' would in fact sink some five days later before daybreak on 15th April 1912. There is plenty to be learnt from the Titanic still in modern times. The tragedy was greeted with a worldwide response to the loss of life, not to mention the questions that were asked about the failures that lead to the great ship's sinking. When I was at primary school (many years ago) we learned to sing the folk song "Oh they built the ship Titanic". I remember rushing home to find out more about the event from my parents, looking up the Titanic in our encyclopedia. The history behind the Titanic Belfast The Titanic had 20 lifeboats with a capacity of 1178 people - not enough to hold half of the passengers on board. Just 100 metres from where the Titanic Belfast is now located is the spot where the ship’s hull was originally constructed. The whole area surrounding the building is drenched in history as, just off to the right, you will find the Harland and Wolff drawing office where the Titanic was originally designed and, to the left, is the Victoria Channel, where the ship first set sail. Over 15,000 workers took part in the construction of the ship. These workers included welders, plumbers and carpenters. When it was finished, it's launch was attended by over 100,000 people.
