About this deal

This book, this set of poems was moving, you could feel the emotions in the words, the rawness just came through, unlike a lot of poetry I’ve read lately, this was really emotive. Emotional reading, hard at times and there were definitely tears from me, these poems show the poets wealth of like experience, although that’s not probably the best wording for this. Truly powerful words Takes us into new literary territory ... impressive' Bernardine Evaristo, New Statesman (Books of the Year) Poor is a debut poetry collection like no other. I not only enjoyed it, but learned a lot in the process. Caleb is visiting Hanna. Caleb is skeptic that Leslie is telling the truth, pointing out how she conveniently showed up and claims to be friends with Mona. Caleb wants Mike to testify but Hanna tells him that Mike is just a kid and doesn’t deserve to be tortured by ‘A’ for the next two years. Caleb doesn’t understand what to do. He tells her that he loves her and is not going to walk away. He believes that Mike needs to speak up and Hanna, in tears, replies that Mike is just a kid.

Caleb shows up at The Grille where Hanna is. Hanna wants him to leave, but he wants her to get in the car. He admits that he was the one who sent the text to meet her there. Hanna gets in the car with him as they drive to an alley. Caleb knows she is scared but Hanna is freaking out because he doesn't know what any of this means. Caleb thinks he knows because she can stop lying to him and they can be together. Hanna furiously gets out of the car as she tells him what A has done including running his mom of the road which scared her. Caleb admits that he is going to help her stop A and is not asking for her permission. He pulls Hanna toward him as they begin to make out. Hanna says that she can’t do that, but Caleb tells her that’s who’s doing this to her, “not Alison.” Listening as Hanna comments that ‘A’ will retaliate, Caleb mentions that ‘A’ already has, “over and over again”. Caleb then tells Hanna that it’s time to put a stop to it, but Hanna says that this isn’t a decision she can make on her own, this affects Aria, Spencer and Emily just as much as herself. Saying that Hanna doesn’t have time to discuss this with them, Caleb listens as Hanna says that if she tells Tanner everything unravels: all of their secrets, all the lies they’ve told, their time in New York, Shana, Aria. Caleb comments that Hanna’s friends will understand, to which Hanna says that if they don’t, she’ll be screwing them just like Alison’s screwed her. Commenting that the cops are probably already on their way here, Caleb tells Hanna that he understands that doing this will change everything “for you, for us, for everybody”, but he doesn’t see what choice Hanna has.As a language professional, I especially enjoyed reading the vernacular used in the poems and this, alongside playing with different formats, speaks to Caleb Femi's particular talent. I strongly recommend that you read the BAD GAMES five-part series to truly understand and enjoy CALEB, which does a masterful job of showing how someone scarred by severe trauma can still have some humanity.

CALEB is a spin-off from the author's BAD GAMES series, and I had high hopes for his title, and this story exceeded my expectations! The pacing was relentless, the storyline had the author's dark, violent signature style, and best of all, I interpreted the ending as more installments could be coming!

This review is a case of tough love (see * at the end of the review), but I think I am being fair. The issues here, for me, are those typical of a young debut author — inconsistency. This book was about a guy named Caleb who kills people for a living. He punishes those who deserve to be punished. As he finishes a job, he gets a heads up for another potential job. Caleb investigates first before he agrees and he ends up walking into a trap. Sitting across from Hanna at Chester County Women’s Correctional Facility, Caleb questions that all that time Alison was talking to somebody about her mother and she never told Hanna and the girls, to which Hanna says that Alison thinks it was Mona. Caleb then listens as Hanna mentions that Alison’s scared, she’s trying to be brave, but she can see something running around inside behind Alison’s eyes. Asking if there’s something running around behind her eyes, Caleb listens as Hanna tells him, snakes, spiders and flying monkeys, but they’re nothing she can’t handle. Reaching across to take Hanna’s hand, Caleb tells her that they’re going to get her out here, “I promise”, to which Hanna tells him to be careful of what he promises. As Caleb says her name, Hanna mentions that she’s starting to think this isn’t going to work out the way they’re wanting it to. Caleb tells her she can’t think like that, “we will figure this out”, but Hanna says that even if they figure it out, no one is going to believe them, she herself wouldn’t believe the story and it’s happening to her. Saying that Hanna can’t lose hope, Caleb listens as Hanna notes that the only thing she hopes for is for Caleb to stay safe, and that’s the only promise she wants him to make. Going on, Hanna tells Caleb that if things get worse she wants him to find a way out, and when Caleb questions what she means by out, Hanna tells him she wants him to get on a plane or a boat and go somewhere they can’t find him. Hanna comments that she can manage as long as Caleb is safe, to which Caleb tells her that he’s not going to do that, but Hanna tells him that that’s what she wants him to do, and he needs to promise her.
