About this deal

Hi, I was thinking of giving two coats to the inside of some new timber planters I am making. Do you know if this would be ok and not effect any vegetables I intend to grow in the planters? We don’t have any exact figures on this except to say that a bitumen coating would increase the overall lifespan. It stays quite soft and gives a rubbish finish which is why it is probably not mentioned that it is for wood - though it can be used for it.

It’s frequently used on metal guttering, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, railings and fences. In the marine sector, bitumen paints are commonly used on boat hulls. I’m hoping for some advice regarding the additional protection of galvanized steel below ground level. Bitumen paint is usually long lasting. If applied to a porous surface like masonry it will last longer than when applied to less porous surfaces, especially those subjected to long hours of extremely hot sun. We have also been asked what products can be painted over a previously bitumen painted concrete roof. Generally, it is fine to paint a bitumen paint over another bitumen product; if the reason for painting is to change the colour, then consider a bituminous barn paint like Carbolustre or Green bitumen paint. Suited to application on multiple surface types from iron, steel, concrete through to masonry and woodChalk and mineral paint formulated for wooden furniture. Also suitable for laminate, powder coated radiators, UPVC, ceramic wall tiles (we recommend avoiding very wet areas like shower/bath surrounds). Here is some useful information about painting tiles. Can be used for internal walls – in this case, thinning with up to 10% tap water is advised to ease application.

Metal protection - corrugated iron sheets, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, storage tanks, gutters, down pipes, fences, railings, gates etc. Curing (hardening) time is up to 3 weeks in normal conditions. Treat gently until curing is complete. The steel will be hot dip galvanized (120 micron) and coated with epoxy paint. However, we intend providing an additional two coats of bitumen paint taken up to 50mm above ground level (tarmac path). While it’s generally reasonably heat and UV stable, its lifespan may be reduced in extremely hot and sunny countries. Reseal tin after use. Clean up any spills immediately with water. Wash brushes in warm, soapy water. Also suitable for interior wood, concrete and most laminate floors with correct application – please note that maintenance may be required in these situations. Porous, or ‘thirsty’ surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish. In this case, your 750ml tin will provide less than 6m 2 of full coverage. If you apply the paint too thinly, durability may be affected. Metal protection - corrugated iron sheets, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, storage tanks, gutters, downpipes, fences, railings, gates etc.

Ready to use, this Everbuild paint should not be thinned and can be applied by spray or brush. A minimum of two layers should be added to the surface. The first coating should be left to dry before applying the second which typically takes two to four hours depending on weather conditions.I have looked at several makes of bitumen paint, and there are several which include wood in their list of uses, so it does seem that you can apply bitumen paint to wood in accordance with given instructions.
